How do I know what position I have on Google Search?

I have the site sitename.com and I want to know on what SERP my site apperas when searching for keword1.

I found some tools, some of which asks for a Google API key. I want to know if I am at position 165, not only if I'm at a position under 100.

    1. Why do I need a Google API key? Why can't I make a query, read the page (using PHP for instance) and then find my site in the result page? Does this violate any Google policiy? If yes, which one?

    2. Is there any tool that will tell me on what position my site appears, no matter what position is?

    Excellent! Thank you very much.

Why this site doesn't ask me for a Google API key while other asks me?

Some tools have Google API tool to prevent overuse of the tool. API tool limits searches to 1000/day. You can't break any rule, if you can't use the tool. API keys are no longer available, only people who've obtained the key until November 2006 can use them. Some members here sell them though.

Ventio is one of the best too for this .. i love it, and use it regularly! And the export to excel really helps!

I was using this before the Ventio:
    http://link.ezer.com/tools/google_serps_rank_checker.asp

Still good to check different countries google serps.

You can use cleverstat tools (cleverstat.com) just download and install the tool and put your url on it... A very good tool in checking your SERPs but unfortunately it is only applicable for Google...

If I have a tool for myself, do I break any Google policies if I don't use Google API? Let's say I have a program that runs 10000 queries per day, without Google API. Is there any problem?

I believe that are some other ways to limitate the use of an online tool, without forcing to user to get an API key which is no longer issued. Am I wrong?

It seems that googlemon.exe, after installing, refuse to work on my Windows Vista Home Premium Edition.

If you are reffering to this tool, it offers results only from the first 100 positions. While I know these are the most relevant ones, I run some tests for some new sites and I want to watch the evolution from any position to higher ones.

    It says on that link:

    >>> This system is done through the various search engine's APIs (that way you are not breaking Google or Yahoo's terms of service)
That is, do I need a Google API key?

    >>> you are not breaking Google or Yahoo's terms of service
What terms of service do I break?

Yes i also recommend CleverStat free Google monitor: http://www.cleverstat.com/google-monitor-query.htm

It goes beyond 1,000 pages of results, and it also records your ranking trends to show how many positions you have dropped/risen on each keyword.. Something these online tools don't do.

It does multiple sites, and multiple keywords for each site. So you don't have to query each keyword manually, just hit start and it will show rankings of every listed keyword. Simple.
