Which is the best forum platform to use for free? I see Vbulleting costs around $85!

Try SMF I find it great especially the auto updating feature, phpbb is popular, problem it suffer from a lot of hacking if not patched regularly. With SMF it is hard to miss the patch.

Have used phpBB (the older version, 2 i think) and currently using SMF. Like SMF better.

If you have Fantastico installed by your host, it is just a five minute job. Otherwise, even I am not sure :D

I'd proudly say phpBB is the best forum solution. It may require abit of modding, but in the end which script doesn't? :)

The latest version of phpBB should not get ‘hacked’, but its spam filter is non-existent. You have to install an anti-spam mod; otherwise, you’ll get so many spam posts that you cannot control.

In addition to this mod, it’s advisable that you install …

    Quick Reply Mod
    Unique Meta Description Mod
New Thread Notification Mod (Well, this depends on your preference)
    SEO Mod
    Recent Posts Mod

There are a number of other great mods, but, you know, you need to spend some time installing.

I am kind of disappointed that phpBB hasn’t released phpBB 3.x Gold yet. But I was just checking http://www.big-boards.com/, and I noticed that some of the biggest message boards are powered by phpBB. So, I guess it’s much more scalable than I thought it was.

you might want to try the forumsoftware in my signature, it got most things you want to see or need default included, also a point/banking system, hide hack, ajax quick edit in many places etc etc.
