If you follow trends how do you ever expect to start something huge?
    ``
Your originality is nice, but who is going to notice?

I spend the vast majority of my time being original.

    Why?
    • Most people don't know anything worth learning.
    • The more you follow the crowd, the easier it is for Google (etc...) to algorithmically detect you.
    • It's more fun.

there are less no. of people who start new new trend but no. of people are more who like to follow a new trend.

I like to spend time for being original, there are people who defenitely notice original things. but at times i can follow some good trend.

I spend most of my time being original. I never was much of a follower even as a kid.

Exactly. I work in my own niche that's not so popular.

Most of the time I try to be original, but if that does not work then I go with the flow.

i concentrate more on originality but i've got some websites that aren't too unique and i earn much more with these.

maybe my originality will prove useful in the future.

I spend a lot of my time.. thinking I'm original. ... Or inventing the wheel if you will.

I think I have a better way to domost things. I don't know why everyone isn't doing it my way. It seems like the simplest solution! What idiots those other people are that are going about everything the wrong way! They've obviously been in the industry so long they're blind to simplicity I say.. ... Only to later realize that I rushed right by my probable mentors, calling them idiots, and then had to travel the same road they traveled to get to where they are, taking only three times as long to get there.

A bit of each for me. Mostly copied trends (see proxies), but I am occasionally struck by a bright idea or two... :p

I follow trends until i see an opening for originality.

There is no need to reinvent the wheel, but there are plenty of openings to make tires, hubcaps and spinners :)

Be original, I'm currently setting up my own niche site. To the best of my knowledge it's an original idea.

if I can't make an existing idea better -- I won't do it. I'm not in this business, nor do I plan to be -- just to utilize turnkey sites that 50,000 other people are using at the same time. Most of the time I spend working on original stuff, but that is often the hardest project type to complete. You have no inspiration to draw from, it's all you...you can even take it more personally when it fails big-time.

That highlights two types of originality:
    • Doing something new
    • Doing something in a new way
Sam Walton didn't open the first discount store in world history -- but he did enough things in new ways that he became one of the richest men on Earth.

Bill Gates didn't found the first software company, but he did do a few things differently and better than his competitors.

With so much content on the internet, is being original even possible?

It is, when you stop & think about it.

In the beginning, there was a massive influx of existing ideas being ported to the Internet. That influx makes it appear that "Everything's already been done" today.

There are new things to be made, it will simply require portions of existing ideas to make them.

Technically, nothing manmade is 100% original.

Of course pursuing an original idea is better and (more) profitable, simply because it is something new and there will be very little competition with similar websites who do the same thing. Then there's taking an idea and doing it differently and/or better.. that can be original too. Everyone needs inspiration. However it has come to an age where time is money, and people are inherently lazy. People don't think.. and just follow in a mirage of success acheived by those who were original or just good and dedicated at what they did.

Personally, I have done both. Trends arn't always a bad thing, if you can be different.. or indeed original. It can all go hand-in-hand at the end of the day.
