Avoid web directories and article submissions if you can, I've ranked very well for many different keywords and phrase without doing that at all, I believe they do more harm then could, well COULD do more harm is a better explanation. Building backlinks is quite simple, get quality content that would make someone want to link to your site. Yeah, I would have to say submit your articles to social bookmarking site as mentioned above. I would also recommend finding other blogs related to yours, and then leave quality comments with a link to your blog. This should get you some good backlinks if they come from quality blogs.
Why avoid web directories? I think the free directory submissions is still effective than the paid ones... Google frowned on the paid directories... Directory submission is old way but still effective way of building one way links....For me it is still effective in building my links...
