You can get it, you should focus on being at the second place"second place is not bad"....
The age very particular for search engines.
.com domains may ranked well than any other extensions.

    Good luck

Due to your focus staying naturally to the center of the screen for the most part, being in second or third place can have its advantages since that is where the eyes are focused while waiting on search results to load. If you are in the top 3 results I would be content with that based on my personal use of google. I normally check the top 3 results. Usually I can find what I want within that top 3. Sometimes not. But if I do find what I'm looking for or close to what I am looking for I don't normally check the other links.

It's that "Golden Lunker Award" at the bottom of the page that gives the site authority in Google's eyes! :D

    Directly underneath it, it says:

If it is user friendly and professionally done and combined with the "Golden Lunker Award," you might have your work cut out for you.

I especially like the under construction page:

    http://www.bassfishingflorida.com/photos.htm

    Ok, time to be serious...

You are rising in the SERPS. SEO takes time, and knocking out an established domain takes time. Despite having an outdated site, remember their backlinks have been around a while and some probably carry good PR. Try to get your links on those pages as well (preferably ABOVE theirs). Your efforts will eventually surpass their lack of efforts. So keep at it.

Wow, this has got to be the most responses I've had for a post. Maybe my title in the post stirred the pot. Thanks everyone for some great feedback.

Snowbird, I think I'll use an H1 tag for "Golden Lunker Award", that'll get me over the top ;). I'll need to add those Under Construction pages as well (that ones been there since I can remember when I 1st started researching my competitors).

Maybe someday I'll get there (#1 or close to it) and my affiliate link sales will blossom. Happy Thanksgiving everyone!:D

Well that site is PR4 and 10 years old, thats why it ranks better.
As guytae said google doesen't know the difference between new and old content and certanly not quality or not quality content. It all based on algorithms over various factors and it seems that currently google is favorizing the site with older domain and bigger PR.

If you really wanna get results and get on the top 3 spots before end of the year, Here is what you need to do...

Get people involved in your forum. When did you start it? I just looked at it and it looks brand new... Get people to post and participate...

Also, start a blog... Google loves blog. You can post 2-3 articles everyweek to your blog. Share your blogs with others. Submit it to delecious and stumpleupon and other social networking sites...

Get an digg account and also start a blog there...

You want google to realize that your site is more active than others... Get google to notice you...

    Good luck bro... :)

I'm glad you found the humor in my comments. :) I've been where you are at a many times, and its frustrating. Sometimes it's nice to just laugh a minute. It can really help reduce the stress!

Since you are fighting to overcome that Golden Lunker Award, I invite you to a free featured listing at my directory (see sig). Just choose the featured 5 deep link option and don't pay. I will approve it in the sports/fishing category.

Happy Thanksgiving to you as well pbruessow!

Content is king for competitive keywords since good content will generate the most quality backlinks. For uncompetitive keywords good content is not necessary.

Thanks snowbird for the offer, I'll take you up on that one! Your post was great!:D

Live-cms- I understand that my niche may not be really high competitive keywords, but it's a subject that I enjoy. I used the old Overture tool when it was still somewhat working in May and saw something on the order of 19,000 searches per month for these. So you are right, not too much competition, but maybe a decent side income if I can get on the 1st page.

Frogman, Offer appreciated. I'll get back with you in the next few days. I was up late last night doing some SEO and writing content. Also checking DP for any good advice. I'm in a lazy mood tonight, and just feel like surfing prior to the Turkey feast tomorrow! Good luck to all you webmasters and all comments were really appreciated, whether they were what I wanted to hear or not. Just want to know what works the best in getting good SERP!:)

P.S.- I ran out of reps to give out, sorry to those in this post who didn't get one. Once I reload, I'll try to distribute some more of them.

How about jamesrmoder.com.. This site ranks #1 on Google with the most competitive term in its industry. They do not even have text on their site.. We better ask this to Google...

That domain and web site is trustworthy and 'premium' into G's eyes. Sites that have been online for a few years usually have a strong SERP rank and are most likely to rank higher for any targeted keywords.

Here's some of the better advice in this thread. Long tail searches bring traffic that's far and away more targeted. Imagine you're selling cars ... on the web ... bad example, but imagine. One person comes to your site by searching for "cars," looks around a little bit, then moves along. Window shopping. Someone else finds you under the same search, but wants to know how to change their spark plugs, so it's a bounce. Another person wants a Ford truck, but you have a deal on Subarus. Now another person finds your site searching for Subaru + the name of your town. That one visitor is more likely to bring you a sale than the other three combined.

if you check google's original algorithm, you will see the LINK is the king. as long as you got more links, you will be ranked higher. then, they changed the algorithm, such as domain time, etc... content is the king to get visitors come back to your site, but it doesn't mean more content == higher rank.

Content is only kind if Google sees that people like the content...

One way it does this is by the number and quality of links pointing to your site, and how often you keep getting new links. You simply don't have enough people linking to your (and for long enough) to prove your site is better.

Also reading the content on your site it doesn't appear to be that good - it just isn't easy to read - I much prefer reading the other site.

Your competition is also much more user friendly - it is easier to navigate and they don't open menu links in a new window and annoy me like your site does. By the time I have finished looking around your site I have about 10 windows open, instead of just one.

Your site is also ad heavy and despite turning away visitors, Google may take it into account when ranking you.
    e.g: http://www.floridabassfishing.us/Texas rig.htm - 70% Ads 30% content.

Google likely monitors user behavious and may be paying attention that people spend a longer time looking at your competitors site than they do looking at yours.

In all honesty I think Google has made the right decision ranking your competitor higher.

Please don't take this the wrong way, I know you have worked hard on your site - just maybe you still have more work to do in order to become the #1 in your niche and crush your competition.

how would google know? I doubt the old site has google analytics installed, how could they find out that information without it?
