What is a back link exactly?

I have always kinda thrown it into my convo's acting like I knew what it was....lol but I don't really know the exact meaning of backlinks.

Someone fill me in

 

a link pointing from another site to your site is called a back link, as it is pointing back to you.

 

Backlinks are incoming links to a website or web page. The number of backlinks is an indication of the popularity or importance of that website or page.

 

simple:
backlink = link to your website, from another website.

 

Yup...and I get A LOT of them from posting on DP with my link in my sig.

 

How Can I check my backlinks?

 

Adblaze.com has a tool for this. There is more info in the blog link in my sig....it's not an affiliate link or anything...their services for that stuff are totally free.

 

Here's a great list of tools to use.

My favorite is probably domain-pop.com which nicely compresses the links down to just the domain. Smart Page Rank is great too, as it shows if the links are nofollow, among other things.

if you are new to the whole SEO thing (and even if you arent) then I recommend an addon for firefox called SEOQUAKE... it shows you (amongst other things):

the amount of backlinks to teh page your lookin at
the amount of pages indexed by google for the domain your looking at
the alexa rank
the whois

and LOTS more...

install it and you will start depending on it like no other tool!

Wow but does those links helps? or only a link from the same domain is counted?

I was all along thinking that adding a link of different website is a backlink. Only now i got the point that such links are external links and not backlink. Thanks DigitalPoint.
