You know those stick with those puffy cotton things on the end. Don't ever use them to clean your ear!! Not even when your life depends on it. I have learned that the hard way. I am always that kinda persons who keeps her ears sparkling clean, I hate dirty ears. Anyway I used to use those earstick I mentioned. Well Sunday I whasn't feeling well and when I woke up the coming teusday I had all dirty puss in my ear and he whas swolen. I thought that it would pass with time so I let it be untill later that day I got a fever that reached almost 40 celcius. I decided to go to the docter who said I had a small infection, she told me the infection would be gone within 2 days or so. WRONG 2 days later ( fryday) I whas sooooo sick. I couldn't eat sleep drink or even talk. My left side of my face whas swollen red and hot. I went back to the dokters and the ifection that whas small now whas HUGE It had also infected my skin and my throat!! To make things worse they had given me the wrong antibiotics!! So there I whas delerious sick with pain in the hopsital and the dokter askes me nicely. Do u use easrstick, I say yes ofcourse I use them, how else am I going to keep my ear clean. Whell he told me that those stick are verry dangerous when it comes to infections.

To end the story. I am still sick. The fever is gone so is the thickness a litle but mt ear is still red and verry painfull and there is a steady stream of puss coming out of it (have a nice dinner) AND I am totally deaf on my left side. Wich comes in handy!! NOT I have gained a new Job)finally after I got fired after my maternity leave) but the job involves working with the phone. (recruiting at kendle I do now.)

So If you don't want to have a vacation don't ever use earstick again, ever in your life, if your eares are dear to you.

Earstick would be dangerous to use if it is sharp on the end, or if it is infected (new, fresh earstick should be OK). Don't use earstick, if you are let's say under stress...Earsticks are not for small children also.

But otherwise, no need to avoid cotton pointed earsticks, they really can't do any harm, if used properly and gently.

I have heard that they are not really that good for you. basically it doesn't really clean them out, it just jams the stuff down in there further.

You have to wet your ears and wet the earstick, and you'll be able to clean your ears. After that use dry earstick.

A little dirty ears may be a source of infection. Earwax may become dried and sticks in your ear, so it's better to clean your ears regularly.

If you never deep clean your ears and you never have problems, this may be OK.

There are stories about how one got infected with earstick, or how one had constant problems with earwax sticking in his/her ears, so I'd say, be rational.

No need to clean the ears at all unless otherwise the wax is too large. Ears produce wax and when too much wax is accumulated, it needs cleaning. However, don't insert a pin end, a matchstick or your nails to clean it out.

When you use ear buds, it tends to push the wax farther inside and causes accumulation of wax inside your ear, causing hearing problems in the long run. Be careful...

I think it would be better to use them then not to. What else would you do to keep your ears clean?

Huh, I've never heard the term "earstick". I'm guilty of using them also. My one ear has been bothering me for a few weeks now, just the occasional pain and crackling sound when I swallow. Hmmm.

Maybe ear candling or one of those new fangled ear wash products is the way to go?

One explanation is that earwax slowly migrates toward the opening of the ear and you can clean it using fingers and the water. It depends on how much earwax you produce, how sensible is your ear canal (earwax may irritate you).

I punched a hole in my eardrum with one of those things - I was walking as I was using it and bumped my elbow.

I use buds regularly and never had any problems.. :D
May that earstick you used was infected and you got a scratch inside the ear.

I dont think they're more harmful than a grillled sandwich - think in your case the infection spread due to the earbud and thats what caused the problem.

My brother had pain in his left ear, so we took him to the ENT. The doctor took out an 8 inch stick, anesthesised him(a little), and dug in with the stick. He used some other tools, and while the kid brother was writing in pain, the doctor took out a pencil lead and a soyabean that had been there for 10 months...

Hope you get well soon Janneke :)

That sounds more like an eustachian tube dysfunction. Try a decongestant.

Press nostrils together with two fingers, and close your healthy ear with pressing on it. Then push the air through the nose (DO NOT EXAGGERATE!). It is possible that some air was trapped in your middle ear (on the inner side of the eardrum); described maneuver may help the air to be released through Eustachian tube into the pharynx. If this happens, you'll feel relief. If not > ENT.

well using ear stick is not that bad to used just be careful to used it.my professor said we don't need to clean our ears too much because earwax serves as a protection in our eardrum. And we can clean our ears for 2-3 times a week.
