I sure like the eBay widgets concept. I just wish it had more options and they could work out the bugs in the widget creation tool. sometimes the tool is down and or it locks up on you. anyone else using the widgets?

    Thanks jpoke5 :)
Where did you find out about this?

I wonder when the cookie is dropped, when they click on an item (like in the Search widget), or when they actually leave our page by clicking "View and bid"...

I found out about it over on the ebay aff forums. Once in a while you can get some good info on that forum.

OMFG. I had no idea that you could create ebay widgets with affiliate links imbedded! Anyone else think that this is a big deal? I mean... no, no, this is nothing. Pay no attention. Nothing to see here folks. Move along, move along.

wow - include me in the crowd, I never even knew such a thing existed.

Amazon Affiliate has something similar to this now, too.

Not sure about the cookies, wish I also had that info!! That's the thing about dealing with eBay i do not like... lack of affiliate attention/information. don't get me wrong i like eBay and have no intention of bashing them on any forums like they do over on the bay forum. I see lots and lots of posts about Dear eBay....Please answer my mails, where is the eBay affiliate team, eBay is a scam, and so on.
    LOL

I would advise all the members here to check out the bay forums-- i have read lots of things that are not mentioned on this forum and may be of great interest to all. Also... Be careful with posting....some people like to post az in nine comments!! sort of like this post here....lol

Hmm. I was super excited about this. I even wrote a handy dandy PHP script to use the widget in a forum. Then the light went off in my head. This will lose us money in the end. I think we need to be careful how we use this. If you're using single item widget, then what prevents a user to see all information related to the auction without clicking to get to the auction (and getting a cookie on their machine)? I mean, you can see time left, seller info.. and gallery images without going to eBay. Before they had to click on the link to see what it's all about. I think clicks will dramatically drop -- depending on your niche or how you're presenting it.

I'm now leaning towards the 'search widget' and or selectively picking a single product to showcase. What are your thoughts on it??

    Thanks!

Watching traffic with Live HTTP headers in Firefox you will only get rover calls if you click 'View & Bid'. Clicking on 'refresh', gallery images, ebay logo, 'Copy this widget' or 'Create your own' doesn't appear to use rover. Also search doesn't give you any love either. So you could search eBay's site, look at tons of auctions then leave without getting credit for anything.

    Thanks for the info hanji.

I think you're probably right about the widgets losing us money in the end - at least with the way they're setup at the moment. I hope eBay come up with a few more sizes, and consider a 'one click cookie drop' policy.

I still couldn't resist trying out the widgets on a few sites though... :)

Yeah.. the widgets look and work great! I'm trying to figure out how to use them for our benefit. Simply, it needs to be items ready for the user to 'bid', not just check out or look at (since they can do it from your site).. but actually interested in bidding. Might want to pick items with low starting bids instead of high bids, etc. to entice a click. We should get some ideas and scenarios flowing.

    UPDATE
I created a simple function to dynamically change rover code into a ebay widget.. might be useful for some

The single item widget would be extremely useful if you are listing a website for sale on ebay, and put your website auction in the widget. I can see many possibilities for these widgets.

We're talking about when WE drop OUR cookie onto the users computer - not about when the cookie expires :)
