I have read a lot on DP but don't post much. I have talked about Internet marketing to almost all the people I know personally, and I know quite a lot of people in different fields & industries and they don't seem to understand or have a clue about internet marketing (PPC or affiliate programs). It's like I can't even talk to people about it without having to go through a lengthy explanation. Yes, I know that I am limited to only the people I know on this earth, but is it me or is it that internet marketing is just at its infancy stage?
compare to traditional forms of marketing, internet marketing is still new. However, there is a reason why Google's stock is at $600 a share In my experience, people know about internet (search engine) marketing but need a little teaching before investing.
I have the exact same problem. annoying as hell, you've got this great idea, tell it to a friend of yours and they go like "come again?" and after half an hour of explaining everything they go like "euhm ok..." and then go on to talk about something else. The dumbness of some people amazes me. I sometimes explain everything down to a t and yet some non-IM people refuse to understand something about it. I've given up on teaching people who don't want to learn better for us IM'ers right? Imagine the entire world competing in the IM field... have a good one, jobic
Internet marketing is truly in its infancy indeed. If you try to make internet marketing small talk at a party with friends/family...you'll get nothing but strange looks. They won't understand. However...every so often you will come across someone that is truly interested...which means you have come across someone who would make a good new client...or a new future internet marketer.
Internet Marketing is growing and still growing, so you have to go through a lengthy explanation when talking about it to people. Some might not even understand it after the long story but i think as time goes, it will continue to spread and more people will know much about it.
What I don't get even more than that is how companies don't even know what SEO is. I've worked for 4 of them so far that didn't even know there was a whole concept for optimizing pages so that they rank higher...as if they thought it just magically happened on its own, or something.
To us, its quite an interesting topic, but like other things, some people just don't have any interest. Some have great interest in Star Trek, others detest it, some are into politics, some are apathetic, some watch football, others watch soccer, some nothing, you get the point. Just feel in the fact that you're into something that can make you $
Leave aside Internet marketing, there are a huge bunch out there; educated ones at that who do not have a hint of an idea about how Google makes money. I was talking to one of my Engineer friends about what I do, and asked him if he knew how Google made money. He said 'Each time I search, Google gets one cent from the first website on the list'..
I experience the same thing. People really have no idea what I'm talking about when I say I do internet marketing. Really I'm happy about this. I don't want more competition! Trying to explain what I do to other people can be irritating though. I think automatically they assume you are one of those people that sends them spam email. I personally don't do *any* email marketing (not even optin lists) so I am always quick to reassure them I do not do that.
Based on the conversations of my own social circle (friends, family and relatives). - 0% don't know what affiliate marketing is. - 99,99% knows ebay but few use it. - Adsense/adwords is something they can't understand. - Almost everyone between 18-25 years is a member of an online community site. - All persons between 18-55 do have internet access at home. - Nobody has bought an ebook :d. - Nobody has a blog. - Only one person has a website with content and photos. - Only one person has a website as a website as a business. The main goal of the website is to promote an offline event company. Of course this is based on only a very small amount of people (less then 150).
Good points, a few of my friends would have no clue what affiliate marketing is, but all of them have used ebay to buy or sell something. I would consider myspace or facebook a blog, so they have one. A few of them make money online but most of my friends have no idea and are confused by it .
I am in the exact same position. I am not even trying to explain anything to my friends though. It will be easier to talk neurosurgery...
I think it's GOOD that people don't know about it. The last thing we need is more competition. And really I think that people don't know the ins and outs of PPC and affiliate marketing makes it easier to sell to them. The important thing is that they are buying stuff online
