Looking for new host - but dedicated hosting doesn't fit my bill

    Hello, all.

I am in need of a new host for one of my most profitable domains. This domain doesn't see tons of traffic, (as it is a somewhat closed niche) but almost all of my traffic is very high quality. However, I cannot rely on my current host. They have continually disappointed me.

Ideally, I would have dedicated, managed hosting. But since the cost is so high, and there isn't a justifiable need for that, I am loolking for the best compromise between dedicated hosting, and cheap, but reliable, hosting.

I have looked at a few different options - companies like Network Solutions, and Jumpline.com. (as I see many businesses listed under both of those domains, amongst others) I was wondering if anyone here can share any insight, experiences, or even the current preference in hosting list.

My requirements - although I'm sure that I'll miss a few:

    1) up, 99% of the time. (most important)
    2) good support
    3) not overly commercial (i.e., godaddy)
    4) no "aol"-ish named companies. (i.e., hostgator, hostmonster, etc..)
    5) high number of ftp users
    6) good client list
    7) hosted in the US. (where most of my business is, and where the whois shows it registered)

I have other sites hosted on Rochen, whom I am very pleased with, and Powweb, who I have had no major issues with. I would like a different host company, as I will be cross-linking these sites.

    Thank you.

    I would recommend KnownHost.com.
I am using their VPS and no problem so far...
Rarely down and uptime is always > 99%.

If it's quality you're looking for, I can strongly recommend liquidweb.com.

They're in business for 10 years, have some reputed customers.

I've used them for 2 years until I moved to a dedicated server. I have nothing but high praise. Fast, responsive servers, excellent tech support, ... .

They're not the cheapest but worth every penny.

Well one thing most will not admit is no matter what shared host you'll go with you're going to experience a problem eventually. The problem with shared hosting is right in it's description it's shared. It takes one person to bring down a server unfortunately. So a dedicated is best if you want the best uptime possible all the time and you have full control if something goes down it's your site causing it.

But for shared hosting I'd say you're looking at from 99.9% uptime (45 mins down time a month) to 99.99% uptime (4.5mins down time a month). So if that's acceptable then shared should still work out fine.

As for actual suggestions I don't really have any since I obviously have no direct experience with competitors.

Yes, what you say is correct, and exactly why I even mentioned dedicated hosting - it's what I need for the site, but not for my budget. It just doesn't work on paper. VPS sounds good in theory, but I'm a bit skeptical. It's somewhat new since the last time I had to seriously consider hosting. Probably something that I should check out a little harder.

My current host was absolutely fabulous - until they sold out to an offshore company who have no idea how to run any kind of business. Now the service is in shambles, and I can't get away fast enough.

Not only NO, but absolutlely NO WAY, NO. I wouldn't host a business website on godaddy, even if they were paying me to do so. Seeing a business hosted on Godaddy.com - at least for me - is kinda like seeing someone hand me a business card with an AOL email account - I've already begun to question what type of business that they're running, and why they can't find a more... um... "professional" solution. (respect = -2 points)

Working at a hobby business and having web hosting for the masses is cool. But when you're growing a business, and taking on serious clients from around the country/world, that tends to be looked down upon.

    Tried jumpline.com - very slow....
Tried existhosting.com - no good support
Tried ipowerweb - bad service, spam...
Explored Verio.com - expensive, for serious businesses

    Now with aplus.net.

Try Aplus.net. They are US company, 24/7 support, good client list. Not cheap as godaddy etc., but I think Aplus.net is what you need.

Stay away from godaddy. Yes, they are good for homepages, hobbies, but not for businesses.
