Ok i did google search for terms

"directory rank" with results : Results 1 - 10 of about 88,800,000 for directory rank.

"directory rating" with results : Results 1 - 10 of about 73,100,000 for directory rating.

    etc. etc for site :

    http://www.mydirectoryrank.webdirectoryreviews.com/

    and

"directory review" Results 1 - 10 of about 167,000,000 for directory review.

    http://www.webdirectoryreviews.com/

Now even the the site ranks on page #1 of google how can u tell if those terms or keywords are even worth anything although they got lots of competition and results ?

I think you need to use a keyword popularity checker like this.
    EDIT Here is another one
The higher the number the more popular the keyword!
It is best to use some other words you know are popular and then your targeted keyword so you can compare between them.
    Hope that helps.

    Cheers

Bunnys arnt good with tools. you type a keyword you may want to target and it shows the number of searches a month for that keyword, and similar ones.

OK.. In the second link I gave.. enter the keyword you want to find out about and then search! you will see results. Some are alternative phrases of your keywords. the numbers next to the keyword phrase are how many times that phrase or keyword has been searched for in the last 12 months..

    (from there site)
I don't know how accurate it is but it should give you a general idea of how popular the keywords are that you are targeting.
EG: the word tattoos has been searched for 727,888 times in the last 12 months.. That would be the keyword you would target but your chances are slim.. so you look at the alternatives ... The alternatives are...

    tribal tattoos 142350
    cross tattoos 106138
    star tattoos 98753
    butterfly tattoos 87760
    lower back tattoos 61817
    funny tattoos 4567

so you know where to target! if you search for a phrase that comes up with very little results then try to find better ones to use!

    Hope that helps.

    Cheers

But it shows only like big terms and lines, no straight forward number like i typed directory rank there, for the 2nd link i am talking about. Its so confusing. Maybe i am not eating enough carrots.

This tool (http://freekeywords.wordtracker.com/) is a little easier on the eye, the results are pretty good, some are a little inaccurate. Type a word in and see how many hits it will get in one day. Simple! It will suggest other words that are also good to use.

Also, don't let competition in higher popularity niches stop you. :) You can still own a niche if you work really hard at it.

It's easier to do something than to worry about it.

try the software called market samurai. They have a free trial where you can easily see whether you are able to outrank your competitors. Whether you will make money or not from such a website depends on the topic. If it is about something expensive and not about self improvement you will almost certainly make big bucks.

I personally like to use the Google Keyword Tool for two reasons. It shows you the monthly search volume (even though it isn't 100% accurate) and it shows you the average CPC. This is important to me because I focus on Adsense and the higher the CPC the more money I make :)
