I seem to hit a road block at PR4... I assume it takes a lot of lower PR links (which are much easier to get and often free) to get from PR4 to PR 5...
A PR5 and a PR4 from just organic link building. One of the sites does very well in its SERPs, and the other is slowly crawling up to respectability.
I've had sites at both 5 & 6 without any money and without any blackhatish techniques. Just requires good link building
highest so far was PR 6 in 1 month (completely organic, no directories, no links on my own sites), and PR1 in 2 weeks (2 weeks before the last update).. I've got everything in between as well, but those took more work (no money but a bit of work)
got a PR3 on my blog on its index page and I have a PR5 on 1 of my post. guaranteed no $ spent on this.

Yes I put my site in my signature plus took advantage of any free offers to advertise such as free blog posts, free links, and any other form of advertising that was appropriate for my site.
I have a pr5 site without spending a single dollar (minus domain reg + hosting costs) and a pr3 with pr4 subsite.
I've never paid for any links. I have a PR6 site, and several PR5s...usually I can get a new site a PR3 or PR4 right out of the gate.
I got PR4 in Tv series blog and PR3 in movie blog without buying links. I just build links by Forums posting, blog commenting, directory submission, submission to bookmarking and link exchange with related sites.
