Hi, I read somewhere that a link from what Google considers "bad neighborhood" might reduce the value of your site? Is this true? And how do I find out whether a particular website or directory is considered "bad neighborhood" by Google or not? Thanks in advance for your valuable time. Kris
If you do it right, it doesn't matter. Links can be disguised as "ads." They can be in a page titled "Cool Site of the Day." There are many ways. Besides, you are going to let Google dictate what you can and cannot do with your own site? Fuck that noise.
Perry Rose, If I was an experienced internet marketer who knew how to outsmart Google and still make some revenue, I wouldn't have worried about bad neighborhood and all that stuff. But then, I'm a newbie and for me, getting my site to the #1 spot on Google is the primary goal. May be a few months down the line, I'll follow your advice and screw Google. MTbiker, thanks for the link. But when I enter my site, it shows around 3000+ links, out of which 2900 were unique???? There is no way my site could have got linked by that many sites? Is something wrong or am I missing out something here? Could you explain? Kris
"This tool will scan the links on your website, and on the pages that your website is linking to, and flag possible problem areas." i.e. it will show a lot of links, not just links to your site. If you look at each link result you will see the link along with the URL where it was found (which could be a totally different site.)
It's not really outsmarting, Google, Kris. It's just putting the links in a different format. Anyway, good luck out there.
I think reciprocal links are the ones you need to worry about regarding "bad neighborhoods". If I do a reciprocal link I check the outbound links on the page I will be linking on to see if the sites are quality sites and within my niche. I also look to see if the page is indexed and the cache date to see if it is a page Google and other search engines consider interesting. Pages that haven't been indexed in 6 months or at all are not places I want a link.
