They are usually to make you enter your email to enter some kind of draw (there is usually no prize, just a bunch of spam to your mailbox). I find these ads pretty annoying. There are more professional ways and methods to advertise your site, instead of some flashing, colorful, ugly banner. :)

I too hate such ads. Fortunately I have seen only very few sites using such ads.

their ctr would be a fraction of what they get now if the ad said what the website is really about. ;)

ads that scream "click me" do have the highest ctr.they may have the lowest conversion rate though.
i guess they bank on the more clicks the better chance someone will convert.

It is a trick ! If you click this window, you will be brought to a site that require you to pay a small fee via Visa Card or Credit Card to receive your $10,000 or even some amount of money more than this number. But if you enter your card number foolishly, you will lose this "small fee" instead of receiving anything.
So please be careful with this trick!

I remember a few months ago EVERYTIME I would load a page on myspace or something it would say "You have just won a free Ipod" That had to be the most annoying ad I have ever come acrossed. After encountering that bad boy numerous times in a row, I welcome the bright flashing interactive ads that don't say anything.
