Are meta description and meta keywords needed for a blog?

I run a Movable Type blog. I have used meta description and meta keywords at times and at other times not. It appears that with a blog, these do not matter much and in fact, can hurt you as an article may be a little off of what the meta description and keywords are.

I understand that these are needed on a traditional website.

I don't think that they matter to Google search, but I am less certain on the other engines.

    What opinions do you have?

Are you able to set individual Meta Descriptions for each blog post? If so I still think you should do that. Otherwise you're letting the search engines decide what text on the page to use as your description.

Meta Keywords...I think they're pretty much worthless anyway, so I don't worry about them too much.

We spammed the heck out of them back in 2001, and now any decent search engine won't be fooled by your manipulative Meta Keyword ways. :D

Google ignores Keywords, yahoo still puts a little value on them, but they are basically worthless.

I think Google still has little consideration with the use of Metas while some SEs like YAhoo and MSN still values them. If I were you, I wouldn't worry much about them..just focus on your title and headers..
