Well, it looks like Governor Spitzer has dropped his plans for giving licenses out to illegal immigrants, which was supported by Hillary Clinton.

Spitzer had to come to Hilary's rescue and make the issue moot.

Very good point! I bet you're right on that.

They start the political season so early now, it opens them up to more mistakes along the way. However, it does allow the public to see how they react to possibly poor judgment or criticism.

Spitzer made the mistake of not seeing the bigger political picture when he introduced this plan. He just saw it as a way to keep better track of the many illegal immigrants in his state (which is a good thing), but instead it was twisted into this idea of Spitzer and Hillary giving too many rights and freedoms to illegals. Sure, he was giving the right to drive to many illegal immigrants, but he was also taking away their anonymity, which I think is very important for state and national security. What was the big fuss about? Did anyone really think a bunch of poorly-trained foreign drivers would suddenly clog the freeways? Even after getting the license (after passing a road test), they'd still have to buy a car and buy insurance (in New York you must have insurance for any car you put on the road, and the police do check random cars they see and will pull you over if you don't have insurance on it). So what's the problem here? A few of the richer illegals get to drive a car, but in exchange all illegals who want to drive are now in "the system," so the government knows who and where they are.

Wouldn't the poorer illegals not even bother with the license if they can't afford a car?

I think there's a lot of value to thinking in unorthodox ways. Maybe this would have been a great idea. I'm not so sure this was a good idea though.

Personally, I think people should be able to read the test and in the language of the roadsigns, so if English and Spanish are available, then those are the only languages in which to take the test. And nobody can read it to them!

A lot of illegals use the addresses of friends or relatives so you really have no idea where they are.

No, I think it was planned, as Bogart said. I think Spitzer gave in to help Hillary's campaign.

she needs the help...she is sliding fast thanks to Spitzer's plan and her flip-flopping on the whole thing...if she can't handle this, how is she going to handle it when the GOP really comes after her?

Or problems come along when she's in the Whitehouse? Will she flip flop on current issue, like Iraq or the economy? What about her thoughts on universal healthcare?

Personally, I'm not so keen on her.

she is trying to portray herself as the "middle of the road female" who everyone will just love. Life's a bitch, don't vote for one.

    What are you kidding me?

The illegals live better then the US citizens and here is why

    1) They pay no taxes

    2) They steal our health care services

    3) They commit crimes and waste our tax dollars

    4) They work for all cash $$$$

    5) They live in groups of 30 - 50 in a 4 bedroom house

Eliot knows that have cash , so he was looking for a way to extract it from them before they send it to Mexico...

Now that Eliot has dropped that he was trying to tax all affiliates

An article in the New York Sun (linked below) explains the policy, its impact, and the effective date of the new tax: December 1, 2007.

I am legal and I don't want a license... What are the benefits of being tracked by the government, especially one that is opressive like the one we have?

Funny thing is the driver license for illegals was not going to be the same as normal one. So actually you are getting an ID to identifty youself as a illegal immigrant :D

As mentioned before, I think the licenses would have been an incentive for the illegals to identify themselves.

There may have been good intentions behind it and maybe it would have actually worked, but I think it could be risky. I think there are a lot of holes in the dam that need to be filled before giving away something like that. The immigrant would also need to be respected and upheld in all the other states, so they just don't run over the border.

I had an idea a year ago about how we could raise money toward border security, but I'll make a new thread for it.

I don't know that they all live "better" than US citizens, but there sure are a lot of perks that they have. Although, they may not all live 30-50 to a house, I can't disagree with your 5 points. It would be nice if we could figure out a way to stop or somehow heavily tax money being sent overseas by non-US citizens (or atleast illegals). It would limit the incentive to come here and for those that stay, we'd recoup some of the money that could be put back into the coffers.
