For fun, we put together a PHPLD general web directory. It's up and running here: http://sleekseek.net/ After the last update, it landed at PR5, and I think pricing is reasonable for a mostly empty directory with respectable PR. Anway, I submitted to directorycritic, but have only recieved 4 submissions in the past week. Vilesilencer is currently not taking new directories, so I'm kind of at a loss as to where to promote it. I've announced it here, and I've submitted to directorycritic.com I don't have time to submit announcement posts in lots of different webmaster forums. I'm looking for a good place to list my directory and continue to receive a nice steady stream of submissions. Any ideas would be appreciated. -Mark
Since you asked, in my opinion. Lose the adsense, get a custom template, actually add some original content to your site in the form of articles and useful links, promote it on forums - other directories, optimize for serps to get some search engine traffic, add deep links and don't link to spam sites (getonmyspace.com). If you don't even have time for a couple posts on forums, why should a site submit? Anyway that is my 2 minutes and my 2 cents.
That sounds like marketing and promotion and direcotory care and maintenanceI subject you do a lot of Bruce But most can't be bothered to do then they wonder like here why they have no business
paid directory is not that popular for most link builder and web master, they just choose a free directory to submit their link. but dont loose hope other webmaster are still looking for quality site or paid links to boost their rankings in a search engine just promote your site and try to generate quality traffic that are looking for paid links..
People think they can just get rich by opening a directory and getting PR5+. Its not going to happen. You need to advertise through a number of ways. Being professional, driving traffic, adding content can go a long way. A better template would be a start.
Umm.. for starters everything you have learned about directories. From day 1. Haha! You can get back to me later on with your new book.
Look at the date i registered zorg links. Its probably a similar age to lobolinks I should therefore know no more or less than you. Although i am a quick learner
I used to get some decent paid submissions. Since the PR Update, It has fallen down. But I wouldnt not think much about rankings. I would give much thoughts on traffic and My directory is having nice traffic (alexa) ranking improvements. Cheers
I'm abolutely agree with Mikey, it's not so easy to promote your dir, you have to do a lot of things, years of hard promoting. I strongly recommend you to offer free susmission, but accept only qualitative websites. Good Luck bro
Il echo what some are saying here already, its definately not easy, its not a case of getting it listed in a few places and then worrying no more, directories are definately not low maintenance, their definately not the type of thing that you setup and leave, they require constant and steady promotion, maintenance and more.
Actually, the question is where to find traffic.IMO, sponsor some free templates like the one u are using, pay for advertising(maybe some banners), promotion is really the hardest and most expensive part. You may have a pr6-7 website but no one will know about it if you don't show it off.
True i could of answered better, yes if time is an issue then a bit of cash spent wisely will help, i agree with the suggestions of muskur, maybe a press release if you have recently done something significant on the directory, or a competition if it wont take too long to setup, offer something free for a short time to make people take notice.
Like muskur said and back on topic here, Free Templates Banner Ads Participate in some forums Submit featured listings for more traffic if you can afford it Other promotional material, free links, articles, etc. Re-enforcing what others have already said is promotion, but not to the limit it exceeds your expense report.
