My humor site has held the #3 spot for funny pictures for over a month now, I'm now list jumping between #7 and #10 for funny pics. In anyones opinion, does it effect your SERPs when you have different anchor texts across many sites? Example... Am I safe to switch off between Funny Pictures & Funny Pics and not effect each others ranking?
My 2 Cents.... Having different anchor text across different sites is a smart thing to do. We all know that Google just went through a PR update, penalizing a lot of different types of link buying strategies. Maybe some of your older directory links lost value, giving your competitors a higher score? This could explain the rankings flux.
I gained SERPs and stayed the same PR, thats not the problem. My question is, if I use multiple anchor texts to the same URL will it effect my SERPs negatively
The answer is NO it will not. You are doing things correctly. Google ranks your SERP for a keyword according to incidence inanchor, inurl, intitle, and intext. Since funny pictures and funny pics are two different terms and both are good, you should include each wherever you can and vary it greatly. Remember the theory behind SE's using anchor for KW relevance...natural links will have many different anchors, because they are theoretically chosen by the webmaster that links to you. So it is unnatural for all the anchors to be the same. In fact, I believe you should optimize for up to ten phrases and as many variations as you can manage withoput overdoing it.
I'm only using funny pictures most of the time, I throw in a Funny Pics now and then with a backlink. I have tons of different anchor texts, its unreal the list in google webmasters central!
Go ahead with multiple anchor text and multiple pages in your site .It not only increases the page value of your domain but also the page ranks of the pages .
