What would come into play & who would be judge and Jury ?

For me i am happy with DirectoryRate / DirectoryCritic etc, for if these directories take upon the role of rating directories, then that it is then their job to do this, personally i am building a directory and i do not care who rates it or what score it gets. I have the business accounts here and at the end of the day the bottom line will give me all the ratings i need.

I would go with the search engines :)

They help in getting us traffic, and which can be converted into people submitting reviews!

I don't think that we need to have any kind of rating in place for the directories ;)

hahaha, well the saying goes: "Everyone is a critic" and this holds true of the directory industry too. So folks will come along and rate your directory whether you like it or not and most will have their own agenda.

It really is the customers that vote for your directory by spending money, so that is the only rating that counts.

I would go with 'users' option.

I would love to see such a option available. Search engines will never be as clever as a human, therefore I would leave it all upto my users.

i dont think we really need a directories rating system, i think its up to the submitters to rate and choose directories based on their needs , Budget and own beliefs.

    thanks.

I went for "we should have our own Directory Sector Rating System" ... why? because most of the submitters don't know how to rate a directory...many of them don't know what a directory is exactly. They just know they need to submit to directories so they get backlinks...in this case everyone is after the tiny green bar which is sad.

I would love to see sometimes in the future a sort of fair and unbiased rating system...and thousands of directories adding a badge with their results on the front page. If a submitter see that badge on 5000 directories...they will forget about PR, PS, etc...

yep! that got my vote too!

I think the rating should be based on the user votes or directory owners votes! google or other SE should not control the directory sector!

It's time that we should make our own rating system that is independent of alexa and PR datas!:)

Poll seems to be a little leading in the wording.

I would have to agree with funkymario.

I don't neccessarily think we need a rating system as just like any other product, the consumers are the ones who rate and endorse any product when they purchase.

Any rating system other than consumers is flawed because they all have personal agendas and personal biases. Consumer reports is one of the leading product review publications and no one can say they are completely unbiased because you can find any number of advertisements on any page.

There was a supposed directory union ot rate directories that lasted all of a week before dropping off the map. However any directory union based review system would be severely flawed from a consumer standpoint as it would spin to promote the goals of directories.

Right now I think the best available is the search engines as they are what the consumers most widely use.

If we have to use SEs, google is a good method.

if we have to use metrics, i guess PR is a good method. However i prefer DR by directoryrate.com

I would prefer to use our own. It would just consider backlinks like PR does, it would use content in the directory, listed sites, quality and professionalism of owner etc.

Not updating the values after all that happened in the directory scene doesn't give much credibility to this metric. You can't just ignore the ranking/traffic sent by google.

Yes, and i believe that alexa is not a nice way to judge traffic..

I have a site which receives 600 uniques per day from google and yahoo, but its alexa is 600k
And a directory with 400 uniques per day, 150 of which come from search engines, has an alexa of 100k

So alexa is not a good thing to judge site traffic, and i think DR includes alexa ranking too.

I agree that it would be nice if a unbaised party came along and put together a great algo for rating directories but it would have to be done by someone with no directories and even then I am sure there would be calls of coruption. It would be a nice little project for someone and I guess it will happen eventually.
