I actually still have my day job (for now) and it gives me great pride to say that I work for the US DoD and I feel like the job I do makes a difference. But...

I also tell them with great pride that Im an internet entrepreneur and that I make darn good money at it. From that point the evening involves into a battle with me beating them off like flies trying to get me to "teach them" how I do it.

So yeah if I were full time web I'd proclaim it with pride. It's definitely an accomplishment to be proud of and I find most people are jealous of you as opposed to being snobbish and looking at you as a loser.

Personally, ANYONE can do absolutely anything. Its comes down to goals and sticking with them. I try to set daily goals, weekly goals, monthly goals and yearly goals. I find that by doing so it ties everything together and I see more progress.

    hope this helps!

I want to leave my day job aslo.

Actully, I have been selling goods via eBay since 2003. However, the imcome from eBay seems very unstable. Actually, it is worse than before.

And I have a online shop also. The income from this shop is just a little =.=

I am planning to sit up a few sites to make more income.

And hoping to leave my day job soon.

I think it's important to start out with a dayjob, learning the ropes and learning how business works. When you grow big one day you'll have to deal with other companies face to face, have meetings and know how things work in the 'real world'.

I'm not saying this doesn't happen when you're working from home, it's just that it sometimes feel unnatural to just sit online all day long and have no interaction face to face.

You might become detached from reality! I also firmly believe that one needs a proper daily routine, not just wake up, sit in your undies and work online or go nitestalking and sleeping during the day. Human bodies were made to maintain (reasonably) natural hours.

I do however feel that it's a GREAT way for third world workers with no other means to make a buck here and there. Thing is just it's too volatile to just rely on Adsense. Diversify and build other streams of income. You also can't just build websites purely for generating income. Google is quickly finding ways to curb these sites.

If you build a well maintained site that provides fresh info for your users, they will reward you by coming back and in turn you'll get more revenue.

Leave my dayjob? Well I work for myself anyway (real world company), so my dayjob involves adsense. ;-) I did however spend 6 years learning the ropes at other companies. I would recommend this way of doing things (but maybe make it 3 years to get started quicker).

agreed with mtrax. interpersonal skills is hard to be nurtured in work from home schemes.

i wouldn't detach myself completely form a day job (when i get one in 5 years' time).

I agree. There is a certain degree of detachment that comes with working from home. Staring at the computer all day in a virtual world of clicks and bits can over time cause a disassociation form reality.

On the other hand, the day to day real world and real world jobs DO build interpersonal skills and important background building. HOWEVER, each option has a PRICE and PLUSSES and MINUSES.

So I think basically we could go over in summary the BENEFITS of a day job and the DISADVANTAGES of a day job. Then we could go over the BENEFITS of working from home (online biz) and the DISADVANTAGES of working from home.

Ok so I will start the list, feel free to cut and paste and add to it and lets make a nice big complete list.

    DAY JOB ADVANTAGES:

    interpersonal skills development
PEOPLE FACTOR - new people - social aspect
chains of command and disciplined scheduling
    health benefits and insurance programs
new skills and company structures learned

    DAY JOB DISADVANTAGES:

    the commute to work (driving)
RAT RACE Aspect and negative employee relations
    being told 'what to do'
    company bureacracy and politics
    INDIRECT connection to profits

    ONLINE BIZ AT HOME ADVANTAGES:

    DIRECT connection to profits
more freedom to create own schedule
DIRECT connection between effort and results
    no boss
    no politics
HIGH CREATIVE element and personally rewarding element

    ONLINE BIZ AT HOME DISADVANTAGES:

    very high risk
lonliness and depression from the highs and lows of success or failure of initiatives

-Feeling the pressure to meet the expectations of the manager
-Doing work that you arent interested in and have no passion for

These are the main turn-offs for me!

I think a day job has the same risks. As well in a day job you can be fired... because of the "rat race", because of some mistakes or simply because the company needs "restructuring".

Loneliness is an important aspect. The human contact is very important and my advice for people who run web business (like I also do) is to make a lot of contacts. I run the biggest Romanian sport site and I have a lot of contacts with sportsmen, betting agencies, personal clients or advertising agencies...

Although, I dind't quit mai day job yet. I grew my business in more than 4 years. Now, entering the fifth, I plan to dedicate all my time to it, as I have a stable income from the website (almost 4 times bigger than my salary)... It's a personal decision...

Regarding google Adsense, I don't rely to it (as it dosen't function in Romania). Also, no affiliate programees. Who needs advertising, must pay for it... is what I thing.

My sources of income are advertising agencies and personal clients, on a market that grows rapidly worldwide.

I definitely would not quit my day job based on Google Adsense revenue alone, regardless of how much I was making. Google can change or eliminate the program at any time. I recommend basing your income on more than one source -- other PPC programs, affiliate programs, and selling your own products. Don't place all your eggs in one basket, as the old saying goes.

^ It's called taking risks. You will NEVER be successful if you only play it safe, trying to keep the job at all costs.

My advice. Once you make over $2000, quit the job, focus on new sites, and expand your income. Treat it like a job and you will do well. Treat it like a hobby and you will always hobby-like income.

I don't know about those two. When I 'fail' at a new initative I learn from the mistakes and treat it as such. You do need to be willing to accept some sort of limited 'failure' in this business. BUT I have never had a site that did not make me any money. Even if the site only makes $10 a day, hell, that's an extra $3000 a year!

You all can keep your 3% per year pay raises, I will just make 4 new sites in a weeks time and pull in an extra 12k a year. Hows that for a bonus. You can keep your cubicle, I will have my office of rich mahagony furniture and ample space.:D

I think web publishing is about as risky as having a 'real job'. Especially today with outsourcing.
