whoever it is I think we need to get on it, i'd love if we could stumble some of our key posts and such
DP already has the reader base which is necessary for its fame.. SU's TOS will be again and again broken here and no one can stop that.. it will be banned again ..if somehow the ban is removed!!
How does it affect the admin of DP to be on Stumble Upon or not? They already have so much traffic.. what else do they need..
What if shawn has actually asked them not to include it ??? I know in the past the server has suffered from surges of traffic from digg and the like ... why would he want any more traffic then he already gets ???
I agree. DP gets an insane amount of traffic as it is already. How does it benefit Shawn and his expensive servers to have even more traffic hitting it? Yes he may get some revenue, but as stated above it's mostly the freebie forum so I doubt alot of people are clicking the adsense boxes. Getting off of SU it probably a good move and lightened the load on the servers alot.
There is no one to contact. Once they ban you, they do not unban. That would be eBay and they could care less rather DP is banned on Stumble Upon. Most of Stumble Upon Traffic was useless but it was great to see our websites getting traffic. I enjoyed Stumble Upon for the fun factor and the extra traffic gave the possibilities of clicks and good visitors. I even started a blog to exchange stumbles. Because of their recent crack downs, change of the TOS, and threats of banning me, like digg, I will just quit using them and I am sure most web masters will follow because it is no use if you can't use it to promote your site.
Logically thinking, DP is a big enemy/competitor for the eBay corp. The Alexa ranking is so large that they consider it a threat. eBay and its owners are trying to slow down the growth of DP, but clearly it has not worked. StumbleUpon gets most of its traffic from webmaster forums, such as DP, so i think it is a really dumb idea to ban us, as we are, without realizing it, promoting their site, while they block us. That is my theory anyway. Rob
Some people care a lot because it was a big source of traffic for them. If done right you can get some major traffic from digg I couldn't make it work to well as I would only get a few free digs but some people did well using this form of marketing!
Never personally looked at Stumble Upon, but stats show traffic generated from them as being very poor quality (high bounce rate, low time spent on site). As far as raw stats, Stumble Upon sends 0.016% of the traffic we see. In the end, that works out to losing a few low quality visitors per week. Whoever banned it probably did us a favor in all honesty, waste of server resources and bandwidth from the looks of it.
Shawn, Thanks for clearing up the mystery between you asking SU to ban DP or the other way around. I knew it would not mean much to you either way, although it was a surprise at the time. Regards, Col
