They actually did a News special on this a while ago, people do indeed fall for these and end up getting scammed for 20-30k. The reporter actually tracked down the sender of the mail and it was from a public libary in Nigera which was packed with people sending out these mails.

I think your spam filter is working properly. I got an email from an email newbie yesterday, wanting to know how to send me some funds via Paypal. I explained to him the process, then cautioned him to never believe any email he ever receives that appears to be from Paypal, eBay or his bank.
