I rememeber a thread a short while ago by Britishguy on where some of the regular DP members had dissapeared to and I quote "continuous un-professional and unjustified tirade of abuse and ridicule". It was great to see in the poll that "That the category is beneficial to all POSTERS" beat up on the voters for "That the category IS TAKEN OVER BY TROLLS" I was flicking through some of my previous threads and a single line from "Google Poetic Madness" is one that reminded of Britishguy's thread. "what are you talking about, you know nothing man, yeah I do, no you don't" with people battling it as though they are 110% correct on everyting that occurs regarding general directories, bidding directories etc. The Directories Section on DP has been a far more pleasant place to be recently and I for one can say that for me it has been enjoyable and very knowledgeable. I think it wise that people maybe note the difference between debate and discussion with the former more likely to cause arguments than the latter! I don't pretend to be an angel so apologies if it comes across that way and, maybe sometime someone will remind of this thread when I fly off the handle!
Yes it shows indeed how in a very short space of time that average discussion has returned, with much less of what makes many feel uncomfortable. Even i had difficulties not responding to the madness and im very placid by nature. Look forward tp the future. Glad that i stayed regular posting as normal though, no reason to leave because it got a bit cloudy.
I too am very pleased to see this forum returning to a more civilized discussions type forum than a head bangers bash and free for all. I'm optimistic once again and am looking forward to great things happening. Have to commend Pete, (Britishguy) when things really started to get ugly around here he held his ground and tried to inject the positive. Things are looking up again, and thanks to everyone else who are working to keep this forum moving upward.
I went away on vacation for a few weeks and got back last weekend (typical of Google to do an update the day I get back when I am completely shattered from travel and unable to stay at my desk to monitor it!)... it feels like a different place since I got back not least because some of the trolls have disapeared / been banned. I know very well that I have been just as guilty as some of the others with the he said, she said, I'm right, your wrong kinda posting... but I certainly prefer the nice polite and positive atmosphere that I have seen this week. It has been a much more constructive place for all and long may it continue
Thanks Rod for those commendations The stand I took was essential, due to what was being said in over 90% of the negative posts was simply not TRUE But it seems that some of the valued Directory Owners still don't understand that we design and direct our own destiny I looked at the Solicitations & Announcements category just now and there are still directories saying PR this and PR that, this is naive and irresponsible towards your own Directory Directory Owners want to start thinking clearly and start thinking clearly starting now, and sever all reference to any and all 3rd Party Rating Systems as these same 3rd Party Sysytems are in-accurate, dubious, flawed, innapropriate and the inept, greedy, monopolistic system owners will come back to bite you, just as soon as they see anyone or everyone referring to their poxy system to generate revenue from any single source The Directory Market Sector is in the hands of the Directory Owners and all Owners need to remember that at all times
Buyers still think that pr is best , tough getting people to think in terms of serps and traffic .I have pr3 travel site that has received so far 14592 visitors from google in 5 days , I was offered 3.00 a month because of the pr .Meanwhile they will pay $50.00 a month for a dead pr6.Going to take alot to change way people think.
I hear you casinobonusguy ------- and with some for sure you are right---------- but eventually the penny will drop ---------- without a doubt Traffic is King ---------- and loyal clients recognize that and many sites get people to support by sponsoring Traffic driven sites This is a top example of what I mean by a Traffic Driven Site Zorg Links Bidding Web Directory http://www.zorg-links.com/
I think a few good people got bored of the penalisation crap, and stopped coming here; yet a few good people stuck to their posts to take control the situation yet a few (a couple) good people got banned and there was a pleasent harmony But now what has do be done is this pleasant calmness has to be maintained! Just my 2c! M.
Thats right and if we conduct our business with integrity and transparency Then that will be achievable
Here's and interesting outcome of a chat today regarding directories. throw it around and see what you think. I was asked today how i would get people to visit the site. simple question in itself, and yes i know the answer in that web adverts in its many many form, external media and the usual word of mouth type answers, that go into the promotional side of it. But this was my reply to that question and open for your comments and thoughts, now remeber this is a potential customer and how i think. I answered by saying "my concern is not how i will attract people to my site, as a directory owner my only concern is sending people to your site, that is my job and one i will perfect." seems i have a new customer.
While this forum seems to have returned to "normal", you'll notice that not surprisingly most of the penalised boys are still AWOL. I think there's a lot of whistling past the graveyard going on...
In general directories have not been able to send much traffic and it really is simply a numbers game. Even if you are getting a decent number of visitors a month, say 20k uniques which is around 670 a day, if your directory has 2k listings and say half your visitors end up clicking a listing. So you have at most 10k (and likely less, more like 6k) outgoing traffic and the 80/20 rule applies like it does in most business situations, so 20 percent of your listings will get 80 of the clicks. Bottom line is even with an ok amount of traffic you will likely send only a couple of dozen traffic to your best and most prominently placed listings (home page and featured, high in category). The bulk of the listings will be lucky to get just a few clicks a month. This seems to be the case from a big web directory that has a lot of my sites listed, they are showing traffic of 1000's a day to their site but they have around 4k-5k listings and I tend to get 5-15 referals a month from a regular listing and even off a featured listing only 25-35. I think niche directories and huge traffic general directories are the best bets for traffic. My guess is a regular listing in 97% of the directories out there will send you 5 or less uniques a month. That being said if every directory owner concentrated on sending traffic and even if a regular listing only got me 5-10 uniques a month I bet it would really add up. 100 directories sending me 10 uniques a month would be a nice bonus.
I'm still trying to get directory owners to understand that there is a different metric for value - relevance by association - leading to hub status for category pages: Directory Structure 101 - Max Number of Listings per category page Directory Structure 102 - Category Taxonomy Directory Structure 103 - Listing Sort Order So far, it seems like very few are listening.
Now heres a point well looking into, the scepticism of cliental and the way to channelize the right traffic to the right sites! only then can the directory industry become any better or rather compete with the search engines! So what say you? M.
I dont think a directory can compete with a search engine, residing on them makes competing impossible. You can only go so far with your independance without actually going so far as to request a deindexing of your directory.
