Well.. I see there are these "this versus that" threads around here so I thought I'll be bold enough to do something I think nobody yet done before (where no man has gone before..... ). You gotta admit that Windows XP is.. well.. old.. and that an upgrade would at least be a "nice" thing to have. But then you look at the default upgrade option and.. what a vista.. Isn't exactly dreamy isn't it? Now believe it or not, but to many people who are realizing the same thing the real upgrade on the map is one from Windows XP to one of the GNU/Linux operating systems, of which the most popular is Ubuntu. Many have already switched and Linux market share has more than doubled this year according to some agencies (reference). Guess they must be doing something right. Now.. Ubuntu has a new incrementally improved version every six months and Windows XP is 6 years old. Ubuntu just this month released the newest version, 7.10, with many features people may have expected in Vista (including eye candy with 3D by default), but running faster on cheaper and current hardware... Now.. to be fair, I have to say something positive about Vista too... Um... no I'm just kidding. It's your turn. So anyone upgraded from XP to Linux? Between Vista and Linux, which upgrade option may you prefer? Cheers
i like ubuntu's look and such but i have a hard time making stuff work and i guess im too lazy to learn it lol so i say vista is better since its easier
I think this has been compared a lot of times already. For me Vista is simply just too much of a resource hog than Linux. I've tried it on a friend's pc and it doesn't run as stable and as fast..
I forgot to mention I run GNU/Linux full time for about 3 years now. Currently I'm running Ubuntu, but have also been running quite a few other flavors before, and may still be "distro-hopping" as they say. In fact, one of my sites is about Free Software (AKA Open Source) including GNU/Linux. Cheers
I love Ubuntu. I have a dual boot setup on my computer. I like to use Ubuntu over Vista but theres some programs that will only work with Windows.
I completely switched to Ubuntu Linux last month after 4-5 months of testing 7.04 and experimenting to find out if I can do the job well. Now I can do 100% in Linux with out ever touch Windows for weeks. I started using Linux 6 years ago with RedHat 9, Mandrake, Fedora Core 1, 2, 3 but at that time the Linux desktop was a total waste of time. Now the Linux desktop has evolved well and it's more useful. for MIRC, MSN and Torrent yes, you can use programs available. mIRC = X-Chat MSN = Pidgin (you can use Yahoo, GTalk, AOL, ICQ, IRC also at the same time) uTorrent you can use, Deluge. Skype is also available for Linux and works great on audio (I use my Logitech USB Mic). Still waiting for Video.
LOL Isn't it interesting how everyone started bragging about Ubuntu once homeloans1 posted that ad with Bill Gates recommending Ubuntu? Just a silly thought.
I've Vista three times (both PC & Laptop) in last 5 months, but everytime I installed, I removed that before 1 month. I hate slow computer and Vista uses too much resources, sometimes drivers are not found, some games don't work ... though I love the look. On the other hand, I've Fedora in PC, Ubuntu in laptop with Win XP in both. I believe Win XP is the best product Microsoft have ever built.
Ubuntu is a sick OS, but most software is written with Windows in mind. I have never used Linux since I Dual-Booted it to prove I could, but can you run .exe files written for Windows in Linux and come out okay? If every Windows program ran on Linux, I'm sure more people would consider changing, but no other OS has the critical mass that Microsoft has managed to build.
vista stole a bunch of ubuntus ideas and then implemented them badly after horribly mangling them.....have vista on my lap top ...an ubuntu box....an xp....and a mac ......vista ripped off so many linux ideas its just too bad they mangled them so. incidentally the vistas broke lol i just havnt got around to fixing it ...while the ubuntus been problem free for a year! (and my comps are used heavey)
Hardware detection is where linux has improved by leaps and bounds. Also you get better eye candy with compiz-fusion than Vista. For those who want to try linux just try the ubuntu 7.10 live cd you do not need to install it on your hard drive.
I've been using some flavor of linux or another for the last 6 years or so, it started out as my secret lover, and after about 6 months of dual-booting to it once a week or so, I stopped using Windows for almost a full two years. Unfortunately there are still a few dev programs I need for work that require me to use Vista. I started with Mandrake, swapped out to Debian, and have tried probably 90% of the major distributions and kept going back to Debian until Ubuntu came out (which is Debian-native so it's all the same). The newest version of Ubuntu is nothing short of amazing. The hardware detection is awesome, and although I don't usually print, it claims you can plug in a printer, any printer, and print, no drivers or extra bullshit to it. Anyone who hasn't had the chance to try it out, download the live cd, play with it for a bit and see what you think. You may not be able to use all of your favorite Window's programs, but 99% of them either work or have nice equivalents. You can get Photoshop 7 working, but I need CS for some things which sucks, and there isn't a current version of Macromedia Flash (the developer part, not the plugin) that works, which is 99.9994% of the reason I even bother having windows on my system. Also wish it had a decent FTP client, but that's not the end of the world.
