Just show them the money, and they won't tell you it is a waste of time.

    Many parents just afraid

I guess it just the generation gap :p. People always associate making money online with those "get rich quick by scamming" stuff. But once they get to actually know how to do it, I dont think they will label it as "get rich quick" cuz it takes quite abit of time too

I'm 21 here. I just recently started tapping into this whole idea of online businesses and what-not. My parents are worried that I will end up broke, or worse. I am heading to college for business in the near future, though it would be nice to actually get a bit of money on the side and hopefully build up to a steady (if not semi-steady) income.

I am currently majoring in Business Administration and once I finish my Bachelors (hopefully next winter) I will begin working on my masters in Business Administration, my focus is marketing and not just normal marketing but online marketing, you should really give online marketing a serious thought when you begin studying different fields of business because its one of the fastest types of online business and not a lot of people know much about it at this point.

I find all the web-based stuff fits in nicely around my career path - which is advertising. I just turned 31 and could never see myself leaving advertising to be 100% web focused.... too many perks, parties, girls, money, options etc.

Still, its a great way to fill in the moments of boredom and make a little extra coin on the side.

My parents think that this is a total waste of time, as I anyways don't want to get an IT related career. I am more concerned with getting a managemnet degree then ....

However, they think I should be studying more at this age rather than browsing :S

i had been scold and warning by my mum, she think im wasting my time studying almost 8 years at university then decided to do homebased business. Currently she still angry at me, but it was not my fault not getting any related job. Im just want to have a pocket money before getting a job but unlucky for me until now (nearly 1 year) im still unemployed.

She never care about me anymore especially she already knew im paid all my billing myself. :)

i am 28 married. My parents are government employees from day 1 so what is
the Reality to them is for me to go and find a stable job. Its imaginary to my parents about building
    an internet business.

But my wife supports me from whatever i do
even if for months now i haven't really returned any investment. but i am a very patient man and i am lucky
got all my support from my wife.

Not at all. My Dad and Mom, who are 92 and 90 years of age (seriously), think it's great that I'm doing this in retirement.

On a side note, I would wager that among DP members I have the oldest :D set of living parents who are fully supportive of my website endeavors.

Hmm sounds a bit like me, i am 17 very much motivated by money and business thats about it, i am at college and planning on going to University, but the qualifications i get there, will only be as a back up just incase investing and web design/development does not work out, which i am pretty sure it will, well if not internet based, retail based in the high street will.
Anyways, yeah my girlfriend cant see any point in mefocusing so much of my time on web development, she is very much a education first sort of person which i admire, but still its what i am motivated by, sometimes i wish i was more like her because she always gets A grades, and i dont. My family dont disapprove of my web development and continous flow of business ideas 'making money schemes' but they dont support me in it, they just sit back and hush.
So i suppose it isnt that bad really, the most annoying part is, because i am not academic, that annoys me. But hey i aint stupid either, usually come out with C's and A's in business.

    Meh anyways,

    Will.

My parents are at the age of retirement. My dad is an Oracle Consultant for a major city in eastern Canada, my mom is an office assistant that's trapped in the hippy era.

I've been pretty honest with them about what I do. They know I work on websites for a living, but they don't really understand how I make alot of money doing it. Whenever I try to explain what SEO or PPC is they get completely lost.

But both of them have their own website, both of which are designed to sell a single product (my dad is an author and is trying to promote his books online, my mom is in a band and they're trying to sell their CD online).

Most of my friends have not clue what I do. I've tried to explain it to them, but all those years of smoking pot when we were teenagers has made them pretty stupid lol. I'd have more results talking to a brick wall.

My wife thankfully has gotten a basic understanding of what I do, but it's take several years.

Alot of people ask me why I do it and why I don't just get a regular job. After a while I just stopped answering the question, it just ends up in them trying to push their opinion on you. Keep your minimum wage, I'll be just fine with my 6-figure income.
