Buying old domain - Good or bad idea?

Discussion in 'Domain Names' started by godchild, Nov 3, 2007.

    Hi,
I am considering buying an old domain (10+ years), because I have been told that these rank higher in the search engines.
But will it loose its 'oldness' (like PR) if I buy a domain from the B/S/T area on this website?
And is there anything I should be aware of?
    Thanks a lot :)

It could be good or bad, if the old domain name is being penalized it's bad, if it have good backlink and have good pr, it's good.

To conclude it depends upon the history of the domain name :) however the domain age doesn't matter that much but domain indexed age do.

look at archive.org to see whether the domain name has pages there, that will tell you what type of website was hosted on that domain, check whether it is indexed in the search engines or not, find out if it has valid page rank or a fake page rank. These checks will give you quite a good idea whether a domain is worth purchasing or not.

First try to find out history of the domain, whether it was used for spaming or black hat seo, etc.
Do not spent big $$$ unless you are sufficiently convinced.

"Old is gold ", an old saying goes, and the search engines apparently believe in the same.

If you had to choose between a man with 10 years of experience and a man with zero experience for the same job, whom would you trust to do the job better ?

Still, it is better to check the domain's history perfectly before emptying your wallet.

The history looks fine (not used for spam).
The site is indexed in Google (site:domain)
The domain is from 1996, name is okay, but no keywords in the domain name.
    Is it worth 100$?

that really depends on the domain name. If the domain name is related to a niche which has heavy competition and the previous site on that domain was related to that niche, then it could be worth it. But for any serious advice you have to tell the domain name.

It is a good idea to buy old domains, but just make sure the site is not or has not been penalized in major SE's.

hmm, nice name. I think its worth $100 if you want to use it for a project of yours if you want to resell it, then $100 would be a bit costly.

Why would it loose it's oldness it you buy it from someone in the B/S/T area? The only way it'll loose it is if the domain has been dropped, then reregistered

old domains tend to rank better. But age is only a criteria out of many. It's not enough

Sometimes you can find them on tdnam.

A domain from 1997 recently popped up on the list in my sig, and I got it for ~$15. I'm still evaluating it.
