Question about 3 platforms...looking to start a niche directory

Discussion in 'Directories' started by Gurl, Nov 2, 2007.

One critical thing I'm looking for is integration with vBulletin because my site will be 'community-based', rather than just 'links' based. A platform with a strong history and support base is also important to me.

I've read through many of the informative posts here, and I think I've narrowed my choice of platforms for a niche directory:

    Phpmydirectory
    IndexU
    eDirectory

But I also see that eSyndiCat and Phpld have a lot of fans.

Are any reasons 'not' to use the ones I've listed?

    Thanks, in advance!

I use phpmydirectory on a regional business directory. Unless you are going to list address and want map functions it really doesn't work for a web directory. Pretty decent admin panel though

Not a lot of emphasis on SEO either

    Just my 2 cents

Hey Gurl, I'm in the same boat. I'm also starting a niche directory that includes a community. I'll probably go with PhPld and vBulletin for the forum.

    Good luck!

I have a indexu directory and it is ok but if you are looking to build a community type portal I would go with phpld, lots of mods and support. The script is far from perfect but it does a lot.

I can honestly say that I have never used any of the scripts mentioned here but if I were - it would be phpld as what I have read about it, seen is very enticing.

I'm going to take a closer look at phpLD to see how well it integrates with vB.

    ATB to you, too!

What do you mean 'it doesn't work well for a web directory"?

Also, what's bad about its SEO?

Its not built to be a web directory. The functionality is geared towards businesses with a physical address.

As for SEO, it does have friendly urls, but things like meta and category urls need work.

Support is good but there are frequent upgrades and not many free mods. Also the admin section is ion cubed

It all depends on the type of directory your wanting to build.

Although it is fantastic for what it is made for, I would recommend phpld over it for a web directory

While we are on the topic:
My directory will be for physical businesses, some of which have websites, as well as individuals, some with websites. Is PhPld suited for this?
Also, I want to include GoogleMaps or something similar in the listings.

Thank you for that distinction, Kendall!

Like Inky, one of my sites would actually be more for physical business, than websites, and I'm hoping that phpLD would be ok for that.

I've just spent the better part of several hours looking at phpLD resources, and I must say, I'm quite impressed, so I'm hoping that it works well for businesses, too.
