I can think of a half a dozen more directories not on your list who do at least that much. I personally use a variety of marketing campaigns directed at the small business including popular webmaster newsletters, newspapers, PPC, email and snail mail. Keep in mind that submissions can come from a multitude of different sources for example, commercial accounts, and affiliates programs.

If I may ask , does your half a dozen include

    goguides, skaffe,

    perhaps

    abilogic, stpt, exactseek/jayde,

    just maybe

    v7n

Anyway, I impressed that you find a use for off line marketing.

Would you say that Wowdirectory is developing a presense as a portal of first choice ? Home page destination ?

It would be neat to see people coming straight to ones directory

Well promotion done right can work wonders.

What you wanna do is find places which will send you targetted traffic.

    I think that's a good option.

Alot of nicely made directory lists also send good traffic to the directories they have.

A good portion of non-commercial submissions are generated from offline marketing. You will find all the major search engines and directories using snail mail, newspapers, and cable television advertising. It seems like almost every small business gets a website, even though they have very little web experience and have almost no idea how to market them. Directory submission is in most cases very easy for even the website owner with no web experience. This is where good support services play a vital role. Quick responsive email and an 800 number help a great deal as well as audio/video submission tutorials.

Actually I don't know about newspaper & cable tv advertising but doupt that it's effective.

We ran an ad in the Washington Post for like a month in there Computer Services section.

    Supposedly millions read that section.

Got maybe like 5 visitors a week from it.

I think trying to reach a targetted audience is the best way.

Botw, goes to PubCon every year, and that itself is promotion right there.

You meet people, targetted people, u tell them about yourself, services etc, etc and build sort of a repor. U know what I'm saying.

In a few years, I'm planning to do that myself.

IMO targetted promotion is the best way to go.

What people need to keep in mid is return, in that lets say my net for listing is $2 and i have 7 = $14 profit, however if my costs ( due to higher advertising ) bring my net per listing down to $1 and i have 10 = $10 profit

i make more money and have less stress and work signing 7 over 10 listings.

i think people can talk numbers joining all day, id rather talk about net return for effort.

Ive tried offline advertising before (not for a directory yet) but in a publication, the results were disappointing.

It seems like walking in the wrong direction or possibly more costly, unless budget allows for some substantial offline targetting and promotion then i fear it may be money down the drain.

Maybe many people wont copy a web address from a publication? i dont know.

If you create something so amazing, people will be desperate for a link from your site. Just thing how many people would pay for a dofollow link from wikipedia? I know i would like one;)

Absolutely true, this would also become a full time job and there would be no need to own any websites as many of us own more than one!

That statement falls all over itself ( in a nice way ), as in that if you did not own lots of web sites you would have the time to make the one ultimate web site.:)

One of the things that constantly amazing me is how old ideas are often re implemented, re packaged and suddenly become dynamite

    Myspace, youtube, facebook,

    Splendid implementation tho

Its true, one needs to be "amazing"

    That wow factor :)
