Returning visitors is the key to success in almost every business: online and offline. Websites doesn't go beyond that rule. We all want our visitors do something on the site and hope they come back. What are the approach we can take to make a new visitor comeback again?

KNEB is certainly right! Quality content that is updated regulary will encourage repeat visitation. I'd add that you need to give them a "reason" to revisit your site, whatever that may be.

If you're building a list (and I hope you are) you can reconnect with many of your visitors and tell them about your latest special or blog post or whatever and encourage them to come back.

Content and fast loading pages IMO. A visitor will not come back if he has to wait 3 minutes for your page to load. :) I wrote an article about this topic a long time ago: How to Generate Returning Visitors

I have a feature on my music site called Song Of The Day, it's generated automatically, and you can subscribe to get it sent to you by email every day or subscribe to the RSS feed. The email has a link to the site to read more, as does the RSS feed.

The content is all original and interesting (I hope). I think RSS is a great way to keep people abreast of what's happening, especially something regular and often, and people have to go to the site to read the rest of your article/whatever. If it's genuinely helpful/interesting, they should have no problem doing that.

    LongHaul,

Great suggestion! RSS feeds are a great way to bring repeat customers (I mean visitors) and yours is more creative than most!

    • Content
    • RSS Feeds
    • Some sort of contest that requires them to return frequently.

You already know the answer...like everyone else said...content.

But don't lose them by putting in lame articles, while having God-awful (flash) ads all over the place, combined with a very slow site.

Askmen.com is a perfect example. The suck. Their readership went downhill. They have to constantly advertise to keep replacing the ones who don't return. Which, of course, means wasted advertising $.

In some cases we support new visitors and others the returning visitors.New visitors will click on adsense but most of returing visitors refuse it.

Good customer service is another important key also. Replying to visitor emails in timely manner keeps visitors feel important, taken care of. Just my two cents.

well if you want your visitors to come back.. you'd better update it every days... adding new content to it. also, if you've got a quite big website you could make a community and forum for disccusions.

Another option might be developing a mailing list and periodically send newsletter. Sending newsletter reminds visitor about the site.

As everyone has mentioned; content content content and updating often!

I agree though with boardwalk that fast loading pages are also key. Many people ignore that there are still many people on dial-up. They often overload their pages with graphic ads or images and flash. Where I live, there is still no high speed Internet service so I will not revisit a site, no matter how much I like it, if it takes too long to load up.

It gives people a way of getting informed of new content without actually having to visit the site.

RSS notifies someone when something new happens on your site (new article, new comment, anything you want). Then people are reminded, and some will go back to your site to read the whole thing/see the new thing.
