Finding Competition's Links

Does anyone know of a good way to find a competitions best links? What I am thinking is that you can look at the sites that are beating you in the SERPs, and then check to see where their backlinks are coming from. Then, you can try to get backlinks from those same places.

Of course, the problem is finding their best backlinks, as these sites probably have loads of backlinks, most of which aren't worth as much.

What is the best way to find a site's backlinks and have them ordered roughly from best (most authority) to worst (least authority)?

Is using Google's "link:" search the best way? How does Google organize the results for that?

    Thanks,
    Scott

You can use the bottom 2 terms with google.com

    1. link:site.com
    2. link: site.com (different results)

You can also just search the sites url without the www in google and see more results.

Google arent likely to tell you information on which links have the best authority and which ones dont.

This would be giving away a good chunk of information everyone could use to manipulate the results.

You can make pretty good guess work though from simply analyzing the links.

This is right. If your competitor have lot of links, you can even use online tools. Here is a good one - http://www.webuildpages.com/neat-o/

Download the SEO Quake plugin, assuming you are using Firefox.

    Then go on http://siteexplorer.search.yahoo.com/

Type in the URL and you can check which sites are linking to that particular webpage. Under each URL SEO Quake will show the PR, indexed pages etc, of that page.
