I need some SEO HELP PLEASE!!

I have been doing SEO for about a year now and have recently picked up a few clients one of which was ranking for a keyword on google and yahoo within the first 2 pages and was no where to be seen on MSN. He came to me and asked me to get to the first page and get him coming up in MSN for just one keyword but since we began and I did the basics like made his page validate, added H1, H2, H3 etc... and cleaned up the code and began link building but its been about 3 weeks now and he has not moved in google, is not showing up in MSN and has bumped down 40 spots in yahoo!. This site is killing me because with past client building links had really helped but with this one I have no clue as to why its being penalized.

The links I built are all related to his niche, have decent back links and page ranks and the title I used was different variations of his keyword. His site is over 1000 pages and is updated often and the domain name is over 5 years old.

    Someone please help!!

Looks like you did all you could, but in my experience, Google will not immediately let you shoot onto the first page after making these sorts of adjustments. Personally I think overdoing the H1, H2, H3 make have tipped them off to the fact that you were optimizing the page.

Please PM me the url and I'll give you some more advice at least in terms of Google.

We really could do with a link to the site if you want specific help.

    A few things to check:
    • Hidden text or links?
    • Keyword stuffing?
    • Linking to bad neighborhoods?
    • Redirects?
    • Duplicate content?

I cant provide the URL im sorry and I know that makes it hard but I cant disclose client information.

One thing I noticed was that the keyword I was trying to rank them for had a density of 14% on the home page and the top 5 in google had 6% or less... Perhaps this is why..?

    I did a 301 on the domain from http://domainname.com to http://www.domainname.com

Theres no hidden text or links, all H1, H2 etc are text not images, all images have appropriate Alt tags that say what image says.

How do you do the redirect.
I am being told that I should have a redirect in place for my site.

I did mine with an htaccess file.

Create a text file with the below and name it htaccess.txt then upload it to your root directory and rename it from htaccess.txt to .htaccess

    RewriteEngine On
    RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^domainnamehere\.com
    RewriteRule (.*) http://www.domainnamehere.com/$1 [R=301,L]

when you are link building you will not see effects right away. i got some very nice links with "miniclip" keyword and fell a few places before i got up to the 4th spot. i also did this with " free online games" and i dropped a few positions. now i wait for all the links to be indexed and jump at least a page (i hope :))

be sure not to add too many links in one day because this will get you penalized.

Thats a good point because I added about 20 links in one day and most of them were a PR4 or higher. I think this was a mistake on my part...

You are not the only one doing this and competition is so tight so there is no guarantee you could achieve that..sorry... it's a matter of luck sometimes..

I don't think its so much a matter of luck as it is skill but I do agree about the competition getting heavier and heavier... But really all this is doing is forcing us to be better at what we do and making sure we are at the top of our game!

    My 2 Cents;

sounds like you are over doing the keyword density. 12% sounds like you are using the keyword in every other sentence. But it depends on how you are using the keywords, we would have to view the site to determine the 12% is what is holding you back. However, thats not an option.

If I found myself wearing your shoes, I would take a closer look at my competitors. I would see what type of supporting content they have (Blog, Forum, Articles with in site, RSS), and take a look at there back links (Link:) to make sure i am not missing anything.

Good luck! Keep us posted on your ranking quest.

The problem likely lies in your actual page content. Is it reflecting your keyword list accurately? If not, you need to build keyword rich content on a number of pages until you are in synch with your other efforts.
Remember content is king on the Internet and especially with search indexing because it demonstrates relevance on a page by page basis. This is true no matter how large or small the website.

each keyword or phrase should have supporting content in order to win out over competitors. It is commonly referred to as 'Keyword Density'.

    Need more tips? PM me.

    Hi There

Hmmm i personally dont think waiting 3 weeks is enough to see any difference, im sure you know one of the major points of SEO is to have patience, the changes i make to my sites take months to show up somtimes, give it time first before looking into things more deeply. Probably not what you want to hear but this is just personal experiance and somtimes you feel you are missing a little somthing that might make that leap, often this is just time !

There is a difference how Google vs Yahoo vs MSN ranks sites on their serps, so what might be just working for one search engine does not mean it will work for the second one.

Google likes old and trusted links, MSN likes new and constant developed links while for Yahoo i have never figured out what in the heck they like (but so far I have notice they are much like Google but slightly different).

You might want to decrease the keyword density, and why in the heck did you had to 301 redirect the domain to the www. subdomain if it was ranking just well without the www. ?

Making changes on URL structure or title that DO perform just great will most probably cause a drop in SERPs and in traffic until the search engines replace the URL/Title and transfer the old status it had with the old URL.

What I can advice you is give a good read on Aaron Walls blog and search for search engine optimization for MSN and Yahoo he has some great posts that might make things more clear for you.

I gotta agree with changes to url structure or title. Don't do it for those already working well. You always do better with older urls than newer ones and changes appear to be new when the engines take a look.

Don't offer SEO services if you can't help the clients in problems like this or don't have others in your team who can't help them.

If you PM me the site I'm sure ill help you solve your issues.
