New Online Business - Some Thoughts

    Hi Guys (and girls),
I've got a vast background in IT from online gaming. I started building websites for our teams and went on to about every field related to the net. From programming, network admin, and system admin just for starters.

I'm decided to start internet advertising. I've got a lot of ideas where I can give my clients much more for less since I can do it all myself etc.

I've been reading up on starting a new business and I came across this forum.

Any pointers on starting a new advertising biz?

    Thanks,
    RD

Welcome aboard the IM game :) It is very addictive, and it helps that you have related experience - I would recommend reading a lot, clicking on peoples signatures, and checking out the affiliate sections as those are usually the tried/true group with tons of tactics/resources for you.

That's a pretty broad subject you're asking about. There's a variety of ways to advertise on the internet and things that work for one area won't fly in another. Can you tell us anything about what you're planning on offering your clients?

Well, I just got the domain name and was going to focus on ad exchange, web directories/listings etc for my local area. I'm not going to attempt going national.

    I'm going to offer...
    *web directories
    *top site lists
*targeted ads globally and state delivery (all IAB sizes)
*maybe target the ad delivery down to only users in their city
*website design package and seo optimization
*any other ways to promote their site I can think of...
    Thanks for the quick reply,
    RD

    *** EDIT
I guess one of my main questions is, Has anyone had better results at snail mailling businesses with printed proposals etc?
    Thanks

I've never tried that, but I have been tempted to try it since I run several locally targeted sites. It's something I'm willing to try if I ever have a site which I feel would benefit from it.

Yes, I've been doing this for years. Mind you I chase 10-20K contracts and offline closing is needed. If you are selling services or expensive tangibles, offline applies heavily imo.

Hello and welcome - are you thinking of setting up the next Clicksor or AdSense or are you looking at something more personal?

I agree - you'll need a way of getting into your prospects' offices and taking them through what you can offer. Classic ways of doing this are snail mail -> follow-up phone call -> meeting.

    Thanks for the thoughts,
And you hit the nail on the head anna. I have another law firm I think I've sealed a deal. I'm going after my 2 carolina states first off.

The way the net is on the rise, the business is there. You just got to go and get it!
    Thanks,
    RD

May I ask what your 20K contracts are?
    :)

They are usually branding treatments for start-ups or complete overhauls of brands, or asset development for tier-1's (full ad campaigns, product launches, blitz assets, creative direction, etc.) Last sig.

2008 marks a big for us as we wrap our network around affiliate programs where you all can pitch/close our slate of services for high % commission...

    Best regards,
    NC.
