This is the worst thread ever. Please don't give advice if you don't know what you're talking about. I've been a Web Developer and Designer for 9 years. I've done websites for many huge million dollar companies and Universities. A lot of what is posted on this thread (including original post) is utter non-sense! It really does annoy me that some poeple are self-proclaimed web designers simply because they've got a copy of Dreamweaver, read a few e-articles and done a course at college.
hey johnvixen, people post their thoughts[edit: thats what forums are for], if you are really a web designer for 9 years and have been designing sites for multimillion dollar companies why dont you throw in a few pointers to sort it out rather than criticising others...
I'm just stating the truth mate, don't spit your dummy out. 1. The landing or the home page should be eye catching, looks cool and attractive. Cool? obiguious statement. Cool for kids? cool for teens? cool for adults? cool for who and what audience? What you're trying to say is that the design must look athestically pleasing for the intended audience. Something which looks cool to a 14 year old maybe not look cool to a 50 year old. 2. The colour combination should be perfect, if possible use green or blue and avoid black and red. Nonsense. What about branding? Pizzahut? MacDonalds? Cocacola. Imagine these sites in just blue and green. Branding is all about communicating the personality of your company, your products and your services to your own personnel and to the wider world. It is about letting existing and potential customers, and your staff, know what sort of company you are and what they can expect from you. Choosing web site colours is an intricate process of combining visual communication with behaviour to create an branded image in the public's mind of who the company are. 3. Properly navigated so that visitor can move to any page. Consistency, logical and clarity in navigation. Try and aim to visit any part of the website within 3 clicks. 4. There should be relevant content about your business or services. Isn't this obvious? 5. The contact address, phone no or form should be in proper position of home page. What's the proper position? footer, right, left? it all depends on the design 6. The logo of your company should be there. Another obvious statement. 7. Put small images with “alt text†relevant to your business. Small images? again ambigious statement. I don't know what you mean. Altand title attributes are broadly misused. For me the most important thing is to keep the end user in mind, whether they are using a text browser are able bodied, blind or partially sighted. 8. Do not make your site heavy and un ordered. Again. What do you mean? inconsistancy with navigation? the content not logically organised?
It aint me who said all that, secondly, your reply does seem a lot better, only if you could have it the first time [instead of bragging] anyway cheerup
I'm not bragging. I'm just saying that it's annoying. Imagine me going onto some photography website doing a 'Photography tips' thread because I have used an SLR camera. I have zero trench experience in the photography field, and somebody who doesn't know much about photography that wants to learn, reads the thread, and takes my advice. Don't do it people!
my .02 it all depends on the content, content, content most movie sites that show trailers and what not like flash most game sites tend to be black background and white text and are "cool" most bank sites are professional and secure most dating sites are flashy and loud you should get the point... its different for each niche
that's right! you can gather visitor but it could not help your site to crawl and rank by SE... also in coding with your design the shorter your code the better...
Thanks Kharen, There is a method that use the scripts in the externals folders. So that there is no harm to your website.
Put relevent and unique content in the website. It makes the site informative and search engine friendly.
