    Hi,

I became a member of DP about 5 weeks ago.
I mistakenly used my email address as my login ID when I registered.
This means my email address (shown as my user id) is publically visble.
Is there any way I can change this - or have it changed to my desired nickname?
I would like to be more active in DP, but would also like an element of privacy too.
Ideally, I'd like to keep this account as I have started contibuting to posts.
Plese let me know your thoughts?

    Kind Regards

    Jim

Also do not make the mistake of creating another account.

If you do, both accounts will be pernamently banned.

Maybe it's possible to speak with the admins here and ask them is it possible to make a new account with their agreement and to stop using your old one but this is just a suggestion, I don't know if it works here.

yea, this kinda suks for OP, made a silly mistake and is now screwed. I understand it may be a bitch to change the username because of the database, but how about banning this account and letting him sign up with a new one, I think even a Mod could take care of that.

If everyone wanted a username change, and you just let 1 person change it, it feels unfair on the others. I think it is only fair that he keeps his current username. I have used my email address as a username before, and i had no problems with it.

in vBulletin it is as easy as 123

in admin cp you can adjust anyones account info including usernames

but ya too many members would be requesting changes

He was referring to the ease to use the function on the vB panel, though with such a large database, just as described above, it may take upto several minutes and can cause server to overload.. Therefore it's best to skip this part if you manage a large forum.

Ah Jim, that's a little unfortunate.
As everyone has said it is against the rules to make a second account here, regardless of the circumstances.
However, the admin and moderation team here are reasonable sorts and I'm sure they'll recognise that you have a good reason for requesting a new account. Wait until one of them gives an authoritative answer on this.

I do think changing your userid should be allowed if you put your email address there by accident. We can live without DP for 5mins for this 1 guy...right?

I think you need to donate some funds to DP and then you can get your desired Username.

Wow. What a fantastic response and really an insight into the complications of running a huge and very busy forum. Thank you everyone.

I actually never considered opening another account - it corssed my mind, but didn't sit right with me - which explains this post.

Maybe a validation that does not allow @ symbols in the userid field when registering - I actually think my form autofill did it to me.

I accept my fate though, and really appreciate the comments from ppl who've given their perspectives.

This is part of being a nubie - but I know one thing for sure - I wont ever make this mistake again in any forum.

    Thanks everyone.
