Hello recently since my site has been indexed by all search engine is seem to have a large number of spam up to 2 new members a day which are spammers. I added image verify, what else i could do this besides keep on banning the users and they all seem to be coming from Russia. I am running VB
Keep banning their ips. If after 2 weeks you notice more, still 97% or more from Russia, ban Russia as a whole. What can I say, its all you can do.
I don't activate anyone's account until I've checked their membership details and they won't see their names appear in the membership list at all unless they're genuine. It's amazing how people will try to put links to hard porn on a site about dogs that's visited by children. I ban the email address or use *. to put a generic ban on email addresses of a particular type. One person did get past this recently by giving sparse details in the application to join and then spamming the forum with links. The spam lasted for about half an hour before I was alerted and deleted it. What a sad waste of time. It's a desperate way to try and get traffic.
I know even though my niche site wouldn't mind porn, well i actually i don't know. It's ridiculous and take sup too much of my time/ deleting crappy posts :/
I closed one of the forums I had for this reason. There are too many automated scripts that post spam to forums.
well you can make a script where they aren't allowed to post links only after a certain number of posts. i'm sure they'll search for other forums if they have to make some work untill they'll be able to post their links.
Thats a bit of a short-sighted solution. You're cutting off a lot of people for no valid reason, and remember there is a huge amount of russians' with a lot of cash to spend, so you're losing potential customers if you run a site selling anything. I also use a mail.ru address sometimes, so if I'd signed up on your site that would be you losing a member who isn't there to spam, and potentially a good addition to your community. One of my sites is getting hit by spam, I just try and deal with it. I've now set comments on articles to need moderating first. If you run a forum that has problems, I'd just add more moderators so that there is more chance someone can be online and kill off any spam quickly.
I can't risk that. I don't want children clicking on things that aren't suitable. I vet each potential forum member before they get anywhere near posting something.
Hi! Why not moderate posts? If you require posts to be approved..that would nix the spam. Yes..you could automate it..as you learn the patterns to look for..maybe use a perl or python script to vet the messages..something that runs every 10 or 15 minutes. Bryon
