Stick your main KW into G and see what directories turn up in the first 100 results.

    QED :)

thats not always possible even with yahoo, boty, dmoz and business.com, does that make them bad quality directories ? :) for competitive and very competitive keywords no directories are going to show up in the first 100 results sometimes not even in the top 1000..

Should have mentioned it's the directory category page to look for not the home page so you may need to go down to 999 :)

Try it with a few different search terms and you should come up with a short list of directories whose category pages turn up, these are the quality directories....

I would say that you can tell a quality directory through trial.
If your listing shows up in SERPs, if it helps you boost your SERPs and how fast it is going to get indexed.
There are many directories that can do that. You have to try for yourself and see what happens.

As a submitter, I think a link from a directory that ranks high in the serps for the targetted keyword is very valuable. It sends targetted traffic (since it ranks high) and improves your serps (relevent and strong link).

You can use this to find which directories rank for which keywords: Directories Link Quality

for example, if you have a site related to home security it is worth it to submit it to rakCha, romow, 2yi, excellentguide,... and others of course.
