I believe it might be. Because of this reason . I went to purchase a domain name and it was for sale at 8.88 or whatever the price is. Something came up and I didn't get to go back to godaddy.com till the next morning. It was sold and a asking price of $800.00 because it was now listed as a premium domain name. Go figure!

Good article ! If it were true I'd like to see something done about it. I know for me, that I was shocked to see the domain name taken with 24 hours and listed for $800.00 smacker roo's !

I've typically (but admittedly not always) done WHOIS searches
via: internic(dot)net/whois.html (sorry, live links aren't avaiable
to me yet) -- My rationale being that if ICANN (who apprently
runs that site) is going to yank an available domain out from
underneath me, who is there left to trust?! LOL :)

I've had an interesting experience with Namecheap.

I registered a .info and only the .net was left in the major extensions. I don't like .net so I don't tend to buy them. The next day I thought better of it and returned to buy the .net... Well whadyaknow... namecheap had bought it and parked it!

This taught us to buy it the moment we found the domain we want.

When I was starting up one of my web sites I went around testing out domain names seeing what was registered and what not. I found a few workable ones and in the next few days they were registered. I guess moral of the story is if you find a domain name that you like buy it right away.

maltuzi.com purchased domain names before i had the chance to provide my credit card details to the registrar.

the time was about 20 minutes since searching and trying to buy the 2 names

Domain tasting is often to blame. It's happened to me once or twice, but was dropped a few days later, probably due to not having much traffic.

How do they get your search data though, obviously it isn't secret.

Google "Sigmund Solares", Kenyatech, and "domain tasting" for more info.

This sounds like a big problem. I've registered through godaddy and my domain wasn't snapped up. Probably beacause no one but me wants it.

We should go around these sites searching rubbish names and see what happens. Hopfully they all get busted from ICANN and have to pay some massive fine to teach them a lesson.

    Thats scary.

I called with a godaddy rep once and talked about buying this great PR7 domain, and he certainly didn't nick it off me.

Of course, the domain turned out to be fake PR, but thats a different story.

Happened to me. The domain hadn't been registered in four years but I did a search and the next morning it was history!

Domain tasting isn't the problem. It's how there going about registering the domains that is the problem.

This would explain it, if it is true of course. I did not have bad experience with GoDaddy so far...

You're absolutely right. There was heated discussion over at Namepros (last year??) with some saying "Too bad, you're too slow, that's life!" without realising it was not about being slow, but that someone else had access to what you were searching for .

I counteracted this one time by searching for the dot net version of the name I was looking for. The dot com is given as a result also. Later I came back, and the dot net was taken, but that didn't bother me, so I picked up the dot come. :)

The dot net was dropped about 5 days later.
