US Pastor opposing airport's sinks for Muslims

A Baptist pastor who lost a son in Iraq objects to the placement of special sinks that would aid Muslims at the Indianapolis airport in preparing for prayer because he opposes "the fraternization with our open enemies during a time of war," according to a statement from his church.

The Rev. Jerry Hillenburg, pastor at Hope Baptist Church on the city's Far Westside, is calling on Mayor Bart Peterson to halt the installation of the floor-level sinks at the Indianapolis International Airport.

The sinks, which would be installed near the parking lot where taxi drivers wait between runs, would aid Muslims in washing their feet in preparation for their ritual prayers. Many cab drivers serving the airport are Muslims. They currently wash their feet in regular sinks or by using bottles of water.

Hillenburg, who plans to preach a sermon Sunday titled "Stop Caving in to Islam," sent a letter to the mayor seeking a face-to-face meeting to discuss his concerns.

Too bad this guy has never understood the idea of separation of church and state. If he's declaring Muslim airport porters enemies, he's got some serious issues.

Maybe we could pull an FDR and just lock down every Muslim in the country in internment camps. I mean after all, they could be enemy combatants...

That is disgusting, he should be slapped in the face and then held down and have Muslim water poured all over him.

    and ignorance

Islam didn't kill his son. Misguided foreign policy did.

Perhaps this holy man should ask, "WWJD?"

    Islam didn't kill his son.

When a country invades a country, the citizens of said country WILL fight back. Don't expect them to welcome you with open arms..

    Ignorance is bliss...

On 9/11 and for about a year after, my office was located on the 82nd Floor of Sears Tower. I'd be a hypocrite if I didn't admit that early on after 9/11, my own ugly head reared itself, as I looked on with unjust anger and fear at muslim citizens living in my land. It has been a growth process for me, to think hard on how much I truly embrace the values we espouse, and how much is all just so much bluster. I also cannot know what it is to lose a son to this war, so no more than I will judge Cindy Sheehan, I won't judge the man, as a father. But I condemn his actions. Unequivocally. America isn't America if we fight in defense of freedoms we no longer embrace, and that includes the right of all folks living here to practice their faith free from fear. I happen to know some citizens from the Japanese internment camps, and this mentality is not the American Way.

That said, I don't believe it is the business of the airport to supply this, and object to it in the same way I'd object to any installations for ritual oblutions, for any faith.

Alas, too, Grafstein is having a bit of a problem, I'd say, in understanding it is impossible to embrace

    and

At one and the same time, so I'm not expecting much from this thread.

You spout church and state (which isn't in the constitution) and yet you don't realize that muslims are part of a religion. That the sinks are to prepare them for their religious activities.

You are probably active in anti-Christian activism like making places take down nativity scenes and you welcome a foot washing sink designed for a minority in our country?

I don't get you. Unless you are muslim, this makes no sense.

Hahaha, AGS, thank you for your substantive post, as usual.

But come now, old boy, yes, as you made a comment in the then-thread to the effect of my leave-taking, you know quite well I announced my "quitting," so "could have swore" [sic] is a bit of the old false modesty, is it not? I have admitted on a few posts, now, I have a damn addiction. I promise, if it will make you feel better, next time I'll say "bye bye" to you personally.:D

Edited to add: I see that your lightning-reflex is on the reply. I've said it before, AGS, I will not play in the sandbox, so post away.

I agree with you, Debunked, excepting the comments on "designed for a minority in our country," and the constitutionality of the separation of church and state.

I don't think it matters, whether it's for the tiniest fraction of believers, or the largest majority of the faithful - nothing of the public weal should be implementing this.

I've already blabbed on the wall of separation: http://forums.digitalpoint.com/showpost.php?p=3755924&postcount=3

Other than these, I agree with you - we either embrace the view that institutional public sanctuary for private religious beliefs is right, in which case all - and I do mean all - faiths should be included, or it is inappropriate.

Thanks for the heads up mate but really I ain't arsed either way as I usually find your posts pretty hopeless.

And I could have used 'sworn' or 'swore' in my sentence. :p

Did you make that "leaving post" to get some crazy gang lovin' from GT and the rest of the crazy gang? :D

Why, AGS, you know, I "swored" you make such convincing arguments, and so, seeing the above, I'm just.....just....really lost, and just so...so....down....:D

I guess you are amusing, if in your sad way, AGS. Like I've said to you, here, and before, as well - I just don't want to play. I find zero usefulness in it. I do not wish to banter with you off-topic here, so if you again want to make me your next obsession, clue me in, and I do promise, I'll dust the sand from my sandals.

Fancy installing foot washers for muslims, what next foot washers on planes or pilots must read the quaran during flights?:D

I am not sure if this is also happening in USA, but here down under we have some (not all) KFC where they no longer serve bacon in burgers as the particular KFC has gone halal.

We also have a state hospital no longer serving any pork products at all so not to offend the muslims.

I agree with this preacher. Where and when is it going to stop?

And it has stayed on, you are just fooling yourself if you think it has disappeared. In fact you are more dangerous than original poster since while most people look at his type just as a typical nut case, you give an air of respectability to the same ideas.:)
