The california wildfires are quickly getting out of hand. I am a california native living on the east coast, and its devastating to see how much is burning and how fast. 250k households have been evacuated in San Diego and tons of homes have burned. George Bush has already declared a state of emergency. This could quickly spiral to Katrina proportions of people displaced from their homes. Katrina was 1 million displaced, 250k houses is atleast 500k people. Make a donation if you can or see how else you can help below. http://www.redcross.org/news/ds/profiles/disaster_profile_CAWildfires.html#HelpNow I have donated as much as I can realistically, and want to continue to help by encouraging others to donate whatever they can.
Read the news before you make ignorant posts like this. 250k houses were evacuated, that has never happened before. Yes there are brush fires every year, just like there are storms and blizzards every year on the east coast, does this mean that its not a huge deal? No, not at all.
thanks for the rep buddy. how old are you, 5? i never said that this was a joke, but am i not wrong in stating that i hear news on fires starting in california every year? how is it ignorant if i am stating that it does go on fire every year? just because this one is bigger, makes me ignorant? there are not storms and blizzards every year on the east coast though. sorry, and to that note, wth are you talking about? that analogy doesn't make sense at all.
Doesn't every state have fires every year? Let's be realistic about this. It's a matter of magnitude. Fires like this are very, very unusual. The fact that we've had two exceptional fires in 4 years in the San Diego area is extremely unusual. This started out with quite the deja vu feeling, but this one is beyond the Cedar fire of 2003, with far more evacuations and the fire hitting more heavily populated areas.
yeah there are, we get blizzards every year pretty much, and violent storms other times of the year. i live on the east coast.
well, it just seems to me that i hear about california's fire every year, and not many of any other states I don't think every state has wild fires though. Where do you live(state)? Where I live, there are no blizzards every year.
where do i live? i live where we have blizzards pretty much every year, on the east coast. Canada is our neighbor. and you might want to learn about the multi quote function before you get an infraction for padding your post count.
what state? not sure if you missed that in parenthesis or not. i live in jersey - i dont get many blizzards. do you live in new hampshire then?
Lordy, was it absolutely necessary for you to come in here and threadcrap? There are wildfires that are destroying hundreds of homes in California, the fact that there have been wildfires before has nothing to do with the fact that this one is completely out of control.
Yes. Unfortunately it is much worse due to the under forestation in the region which is a direct result of insane environmental policies trying to protect spotted owls and sage brush.. Do however donate to the Red Cross.. It is a great organization, and helps with disasters better than anyone on the planet.
It is a sad situation, I hope churches in the area are helping as much as they do around here when natural tragedy strikes.
14 of the fires are fully contained, so that's good news. From the non-firefighting aspect of it, they are doing a much better job than they did with katrina.
Helps when you have a conservative governor who is actually willing to act, and had a plan... Hopefully the recent change in power in LA will mean hte same thing.
Southern CA has Santa Ana winds every fall where the winds blow down from the mountains towards the sea. As the blow down the mountains, they get faster and hotter. Yes, usually there are a couple of fires every year, just like other parts of the country have a couple of blizzards or tornadoes. Usually, firefighters are able to put them out fairly quickly, or else the fires blow away from housing development and into the forests. On Sunday, when all this started, the winds were blowing at 40+ mph with gusts up to 60+. I've experienced really strong Santa Ana winds before, but this was the first time that I saw street signs breaking off the stoplights that they were hanging on, or twisted around them. So, this time, when the fires started, they quickly out of control. To give some perspective, a small fire will burn under 10,000 acres. A medium one will burn up to 100,000 acres. A large one up to 150,000? So far, the California fires have burned over half a million acres (+500,000). A hundred homes lost is catastrophic enough. California has lost over 1000 homes now. And, KunkVentures, I know that you're upset, but lets not stoop to name calling. Not everyone is from California and understands the situation here. Lordy, hope that helps. I didn't find your message offensive and gave you a +rep. StephFoster - I hope that you and your family are ok, seeing as how Poway was ground zero for the fires on Tuesday? Wednesday? night?
i didnt call anyone a name anywhere. that rep was not from me so before you go off being the one to pass judgement on every single poster, why dont you get your facts straight, mkay thanks.
