With several months of work I have got quite a few keywords ranked on the first page of Google. SEO played a vital role on this.
But most of them are stuck on position 5-10, there is no sign of getting better. I have tried increasing number of backlinks. Still same for few months.
Whats your experience on this issue, if you like to share?

based on my own experience, link building really helps in SERPs..

Link build using your target KW as an anchor.

Through that I ranked in my target KW in two weeks

I think probably now that you've been building links, you should be updating your content and adding new content every week with good keyword density(2-4%). Also, submit your site to social bookmarking websites, this helps in a lot of cases. But DON'T stop link building.

    Cheers... :)

after all of your hard work, maybe you might want to rest...

meaning, wait for the outcome of your efforts. every exerted effort has its positive outcome.

:) I don't want to stop man, until I get where I want to be. Hard work do help succeed.
Apparently there is no way around other then building links. Only I can't go too fast doing all manually.

    Focus on:

Getting backlinks from pages/sites with related content to yours.

Improving the keyword density, position, font size, etc of your pages.

    Use long tail url's

Don't spread yourself too thin by having too many key words

Only focus on key words that people would realistically search for, otherwise you are wasting your time.

Download and use SEOQuake and Niche Watch plugins for Firefox. These are really, really, really useful!!

    <edit>

Oh, realize that SERPs change over time with all the variables coming into play.

You will notice new content being given a boost of high SERP position for a few days. Probably to give it a chance for visitors to find it.

If you are in a tight key word market, it can be a tough battle.

You've probably hit a link wall, and the first domains are really authorative and have lots of backlinks. Have you checked the number of their backlinks? Have you checked how many of their backlinks have as anchor text your keywords? Do that, do a comparison, and start link building again. You can also do an "allinanchor" command. I can bet you the rankings will be the same. ;)

ya agree with Paul Timmons. you need to check on your competitor. same number of baclink still doesn't mean you are on the same level. anchor text and relevancy is another important aspect in link building

Thanks guys, its very nice talking with knowledgeable people. I have about 1800+ backlinks so far in 5 months. Most of them from articles, commenting, social networking sites, my own blog etc. I use only few anchor texts. Along with those I got some keywords picked by search engines.
Probably I have to wait some more time to get better results.
