The problem with Cheney is that his position and the utter lack of accountability for his words or actions represent a dictatorial element within the American govt.

With a president who lacked any experience with international affairs upon taking office, and who allowed Cheney to take an unprecidented role of power within the whitehouse, Cheney position is more like a dictator issuing fiats then as an elected representative of the people.

He only answers to the President who has given him essentially utter freedom to espouse any perspective. Cheney makes himself unavailable to any source that questions his comments and motives and essentially only appears and speaks with highly partisan groups that are in support of his commentary.

He has made a few limited appearances on public tv before non-supportive newspeople where he has demonstrated his on topic singular perspective.

He doesn't engage in debate or press conferences. He has restricted any and all access to any documentation from his office, and doesn't appear before Congress to testify. Even when his comments appear to completely disconnect with policy or actual actions by the government he is untouched by any outside source or is the recipient of any public commentary by the President that speaks to Cheney's divergence from where the government is headed.

In May of this year, Senator Clinton as a member of the Senate Armed Service Committee requested information on Pentagon planning to remove troops and equipment from Iraq. She requested the information from Secretary Gates.

The initial response was from UnderSecretary Eric Edelman who accused the Senator of taking an action and requesting information that would "support enemy propoganda".

The Senator well knew the rights of Senate oversight, and quite possibly knew that this type of planning was a standard matter of procedure.

She pursued this further and received a public response from Secretary Gates, who diplomatically acknowledged her rights to the information, acknowledged that the planning was in fact being done, acknowledged that the response from UnderSecretary Edelman was inappropriate in tone and comment and agreed to share the information with the Senate Committee. He also provided support for Edelman as an employee at the Dept. of Defense.

Shortly thereafter, Cheney spoke up and stated that he felt that Edelman was perfectly fine with his response and stated that information of this sort should not be shared with Congress.

Gates did present the information to the Congressional Committee. Clinton asked and wrote the President for a response on this issue and a response on this disagreement in words and actions within the administration and there has been no public response from the President.

In September the President announced withdrawal actions.

Cheney can say whatever he wants whenever he wants and is not held accountable in any public way.

Essentially he provokes and attacks and is free to do so as much as he wishes.

He is essentially an untouched quasi president who is unaccountable to the public. That is unprecedented.

Even as Bush made comments about the Iranian nuclear situation potentially leading to WWIII, he then made subsequent public comments that mitigated and lessoned the language of that threat.

That subsequent language is a result of being accountable.

Cheney is simply unaccountable in any capacity. He may be accountable to Bush, on the other hand he may be the puppetmaster that pulls Bush's strings.

It is a simply unprecedented position within American history.

Without any checks or balances it is dangerous. The history of American govt and policy is to provide those types of checks and balances.

    Cheney has none.

Frankly they should muzzle him, imho :D

    You know what's funny?

He still is continuing his lie and denial at this very moment!
    http://forums.digitalpoint.com/showthread.php?t=524938
He refuses to admit he was wrong about the Geneva Convention, instead he's gone to twisting 2-3 words totally out of context.

He loves digging his own grave.

What's even more sad is I think he actually believes he is right!
