Hey, I have just made my first attempt at making a nice glossy button and I would like to get some feedback and suggestions. Please be constructive if you have anything negative to say. Glossy Button Be really nice if you can leave a comment on the blog too if you don't mind. Thanks in advance!
Or you can just put your image here, so we don't have to look at your ads I'm not too sure whether it actually looks gloosy too me though? I'm not sure what its missing :s
Well if you read my blog it tells you on there that I have not followed any tutorials, I really just opened up Photoshop and had a play to make what I see on other sites.
I've also never read any tutorials but what you've produced seems very flat and not so glossy. I reckon the same effect could be reproduced in Paint.
If you get a chance look at the like of the Microsoft Vista interface and see the effects that they use in order to produce that effect, it is quite hard to replicate, but as with everything, its practice, practice and more practice!
Not bad for the first button. It will be more glossy and perfect just practice harder. By the way... Here I have something for you that you might be interested with I'll give you the psd if you like. TY. TY
WoW! That is indeed glossy, I have sent you a PM for the PSD if your still ok with sending it. If anyone could maybe explain what you think I could do to improve that image then that would be cool. I hope it is not the worst first attempt you people have seen for a glossy image.
i think you should put a little gradient on the text, darker at the bottom, and round the corners with a small 1-2 px border of black or white (depending on what your site background color is) all in all i think its great for a first button.
It's not all that glossy but I like it, it has a clean look to it. As for your top image on your website "Gobbly2100" you should use anti-aliasing. It has rough edges that's really noticeable.
I like your's better than #7's. The key to web 2.0 and glossy objects is subtlety. What I recomend is a subtle stroke around the button, VERY similar in color, but slightly off. I also reccomend rounded corners but this is not required. A subtle gradient (again, VERY light) on the button, AS well as on the highlight. (eg- make the highlight get a tiny bit whiter as it goes up). Also for the highlight, don't always make it in the shape of a bulge going down -- experiment with waves and straight lines, too. Hope that helped. Here are examples of ideal glossy buttons, imo:
Oh wow, I really like those examples of how they should look tbh. I just opened up Photoshop now and I am going to have another play with all this advice here. Lets see how I get on, I will post an updated image of how am doing when am done so you can tell me what you think. Thanks!
Good luck. You should look up some tutorials. Even if you can do it by yourself, you might discover quicker or better techniques by looking around. Everyone seems to do it their own way.
Hey again, Well I have done another image which I hope is better than my previous even if it is still not quite there. I have avoided the tutorials because I get lost when it starts refering to tools which don't seem to be where they say even though I make sure I am using the same version of Photoshop. Well let me know what you think of my latest image anyway . EDIT: I just adjusted it slightly and think this one looks slightly better Thanks!
