With all the emphasis being on the Middle East and trying to "stabilize" the region, what about the Arctic? Just recently there was a report that Britain was trying to extend their rights to part of the Arctic Sea (possibly for future oil rights). Will the next front be fought on behalf of "stabilizing" the Arctic? Here's an article from 2006 about Arctic oil and Russia. And another from 1989 and Canada And Greenland opening up to it. And a recent article from CAColorado
I think things will get pretty messy over the artic if WWIII doesn't break out first. With Russia flag planting stunt it is a clear goal that a lot of countries want to take ownership of the region. And with the worlds oil supplies getting lower and lower by the day, eventually they will have to turn to artic to get oil... since any other energy source is pretty much forbidden from going mainstream.
I'd like to see how messy they become with US and Russia into it, and some equals facing off each other. Will give an entire new perspective of conflict as the usual developed vs underdeveloped country conflict has become cliched to death.
Im sure the US has plans to invade the Artic and liberate its polar bears at the costs of taking its oil.
sorry to say, but this time Russia wont stay in shade, this region was explored mostly by Russians, (Laptev, Lomonosov, etc, all russian names). So, I doubt that Russia will share area that belong to them, maybe only in the case of business deal, etc. I saw today on TV, that they made tests and will be doing it oficially now (I think you have to dive take something in there and prove that it's a continuos part of your country's land) P.s: Artur Chilingarov is more a polar explorer than a deputy speaker.....he got that status only after this arguement started.
I don't think anyone has a right to it, and that we should all keep the hell away from it. Having all this machinery up there digging is going to speed up the melting like there is no tomorrow. Instead all countries should work on finding an alternative energy soucre, and if we can't find one by the time the oil runs out than too bad for us, we lived without oil for much longer than we lived with oil, I am sure we will be fine, a little uncomfortable at first, but after a bit TOTALLY fine. The artic should be left alone and preserved as one of the few peaceful untouched natural areas of the world.
Actually we're claiming the Antarctic, not the Arctic. I think the government are hoping that some people are already there and then we can send a gunboat down and have a war with them. I'm currently reading a MASSIVE book on 'Britain's forgotten wars of the 19th Century' and the Antarctic is the only continent where we didn't have a war some time back then. As we've currently reverted back to our old "Lets invade other countries and smash them up" ways again it looks like we're trying to get the full set.
