I can't belive this. One of the members on my forum recieved this as a PM shortly after the person signed up. This is the first time I have heard of this happening on a forum. Has anyone else heard of this happening on a forum?

I haven't seen that particular message but you'd be astounded if you knew how many people give PM spam a go.

This is popularly known as the "Nigerian scam" or the 419 scam and it is as old as the hills. Its appearance on forums is no surprise. Its appearance on DP forums, complete with active email address is a little more surprising...

So long as there is money to be made from spamming it'll be finding it's way through to us.
So long as there are active forum owners like muppethunter trying to keep their forums clean then there will be posts discussing the spam.

Sure, I was just wondering whether it was really necessary to post the entire thing, complete with email address... Someone might fall for it!

Fair enough, but surely those scams have been done to death and webmasters (at least) know better?

    I definately know better.

I get them all the time in my yahoo email account. I just found it shocking that they would sign up, pick a random user who was online at the time and spam them in a PM. It has only happened one time, but if it happens again I will disable pm's for new members. That should take care of it.

I think you'll find he spammed more than one member.

there was a guy signing up as einstein and sending a nonsense phrase. I got it from several different forums. I think he was probably testing the PM blaster type software and looking for tolerant forums.
