A new way of filtering the trash in the B/S/T sites section - debate

This section is well over due a haul over. There are still some gems to be found in the sites section but trawling through the mass of lower quality sites is becoming a bit of a nightmare.

    How can we solve this?

I think we need to divide the sites into different price brackets. for example:

    $0-$200
    $200-$400
    $400-$600
    $600-$800
    $800-$2000
    $2000+

whether this is the starting value or BIN price im not sure.

We need some healthy debate on the matter to sort out this sectioin.

    Cheers

I think the whole section needs to be more organized. People suggested before, but of course it was denied.

I don't think organizing by price will be very successful. I think seperating buying vs. selling would be a good first step though.

The reason serperating by price would not work is because a large majority of the pricing falls between $1-$50 and it also depends on the term lengths.

Having buying and selling seperately would be benificial because at different times folks are looking for one or another and it is confusing and easy to miss good deals when they are all together.

Agreed, I usually search for "wts" or "wtb", but not everyone puts that in the header...

First and foremost we need a "Premium Sites" section, same as Sitepoint has it, sites with over $10k BIN go in that section, simple as. That's something that really needs to be implemented otherwise DP is slowly losing the high bidders as they are having difficulty finding high quality sites. For somebody who has a budget of $xx,xxx DP has become a nightmare of a marketplace.

Other than that, I think the under $10k section should be split by theme - "Proxies" and "Myspace Sites" I think are 2 seperate categories that really need to be there, as lots of sites sold are proxies and myspace stuff, and lots of people look for sites that are anything BUT proxy or myspace related, while others look precisely for that kind of stuff as these sites are usually very cheap.

And obviously WTS needs to be split from WTB in a seperate forum... this is only common sense.

    Agreed!

I don't know if it's possible, but I'd like to see a way to determine if it's content is unique... I hate these cookie-cutter sites for sale that have been around 2 weeks and have no unique content to offer the web... It's probably not possible, but it was nice to vent :)

I agree with these very sensible suggetions. Perhaps 10,000k is a bit high, perhaps not?

Proxies and myspace sites definately need sorting out.

    What do other members think?

Creating more sections is only going to make it harder for the DP mods to ensure everyone is following the new rules. Its hard to change 100,000 members old way of doing things. Good luck though :D

I think small steps would be nice. You won't be able to catergorize all the marketplace listings. For link sales seperating buying and selling would be helpful, right now it is quite messy.

Seperating sites here based on selling price would not really work, I doubt there is many (if any) sites selling for more than $5k on a regular basis (let along $10k). It works at SP because people are paying double the listing price to sell 'premium sites'. There could be a seperate forum for unique sites and turnkey type sites but like the poster above states there would be additional moderation work.

Seperating buying and selling for links should be quite simple because it is more of a clear-cut seperation.

Further split each of the forum sections similar to the Google forum.

I think that is a perfect idea.

Make a Buyers area and a sellers area.

I'm not sure it will matter but I'll throw my hand up here to agree. A seperate "social exchange" forum to free up the actual freebies, better organization in the sites for sale forum, etc.

I do my low-end shopping and selling at DP and my high-end shopping and selling at SP, simple as that. I'd honestly prefer to keep it all here and I think better organization would do lots toward pulling the higher end buyers here full-time.

And there are never gonna be any regular sales of large sites if for every large site there are 500 proxies worth $50.

Large sites tend not to attract as many comments as smaller sites. Usually there is no bidding going on in the thread. Negotiations tend to be done through PMs. BUT, if your sales thread does not get a comment for 24 hours, it can end up as far as page 8! In just 24 hours, your thread's on page 8 of the forum! And there's maybe 2 large sites getting sold a day, so for somebody looking to buy those large sites, they have to go through 8 pages of crap they are not interested in EVERY DAY, and even then, they would probably miss the sites they are interested in because there's so much crap.

Compare that with sitepoint, which has a seperate premium sites forum AND displays prices in the listing so you can only look at what you're interested in. No wonder DP is losing out heavily. Nowadays if you post an expensive site on DP, one of the first 5 posts is undoubtedly going to suggest posting your site on Sitepoint.

It wasn't always like this. There was a time when sites on DP got BIN'd for $xx,xxx faster than on sitepoint, like zeldauniverse for example.

And there are still people ready to bid 5 figures or over for websites, and people ready to sell sites for 5 figures or over on here... DP is just making life really difficult for both parties, and in doing so it is losing out on the best sales and the highest bidders. Rules about the pricing don't have to be as strict, like "OMG you posted a $9k site in the $10k section" is over the top. As long as a site is worth a considerable amount, it can go in that section, besides, you're not gonna know the true worth of a site until it's sold. A split like "Turnkey" and "Established" simply doesn't cut it, there needs to be a split by site's approximate estimated worth.

Don't forget to point out that SP is operating on a 'paid' model, $40 to list a premium site.

I agree some steps could be taken to help, like seperating turnkeys and established sites. I am not sure if Shawn is considering movingn to a paid model for site sales.

    I think...

    ...

...it will never happen. Given that name changes cannot occur because of the shear size of the database, I can only guess what a new forum would do to it. Sure, it doesn't effect the user's table, but this is VB. If they did organize it in a certain way, perhaps the best order would start with category (Buying. Selling. Trading.) Then within each there would be the High Bracket buying, Median, and Low. Content creation services and design services would be in each bracket and such. But I maintain...

    ...It won't happen.

since a lot of the sites for sale are proxies, I think for the time being give thm a separate section. I own over 150 prxies and the last thng I want is to buy another one. 50% of the sites on the first page are proxies.

also a separate section for sites that are turn-key would be great. I hate opening a thread where I says assume no traffic or revenue.

I think sorting by price is a bad idea, I have had sites start at $10 and end at $300.

If you separate the sections them the MODS will have more work moving and managing threads that are placed in the wrong section.

Just a bit more work for them to do, and they are extremely busy as it is.

Well the mods are a volunteer position and Im sure we could get more on board. Its just the fact that it makes for a better user experience if the mods are the ones moving the threads around instead of potential buyers having to muddle through 8 pages of posts to look for a decent site.

And the fact that SP has a paid model only gives DP the upper hand. I still know people who generally post up a site for sale on DP, and then if DP doesn't work out, they pay for it on SP. It's just that DP lacks organisation so much, posting it here before SP generally does not work out.

I'm not thinking of sorting $10 sites from $300 ones... I'm thinking of sorting $300 sites from $30,000 sites. I really doubt you would assume a site's worth at $xxx and it would get sold for $xx,xxx or the other way around.

Technical problems are solvable. This is not the largest forum in the world. There's even a goddamn paintball forum that's got 9 times more posts, 3 times more members, and has had nearly double the users online maximum of DP. And it runs vB. And we're supposed to be webmasters, people who know their shit when it comes to running websites (and forums), but apparently we're outdone by people who like to shoot paint at each other? (not saying it's a bad pastime though!)

Additional work for moderators should not be a reason to degrade user experience. As the previous poster pointed out, there's always the option to get more mods. BST is absolutely undoubtedly the most used section of this forum, lots of sensible people go through every thread in it every single day, I'm sure some of them would be ready to moderate the forum.
