I have an ecommerce web site that sells boating products, and I working on building links for this site.

It’s difficult to get a lot of “Boating Sites” to find links on. So what I’m wondering is how relevant does another site need to be.

Will a Sports blog work or soccer blog work, or would it have to do with water only?

    Thanks for your help

There are a lot of sites that talk about water that don't have anything to do with boats. Here's one.

How relevant does a link have to be? Do you have any directory links? Those are 0 % relevant to a boating site. Now how 'bout a jewelry store that sells primarily those yachting watches, the ones with all the markings and movable dials to find out what direction you're facing and how fast you're going? That's probably more relevant to boating than the water page, above. But how would a search engine know that?

My opinion is that relevance is something humans are really good at recognizing, but robots and spiders aren't. Good anchor text and relevant content will make people more likely to click a link, but if you can deal with having a link that not everybody clicks, I say there's no requirement for two pages to be "relevant" in the sense that they use some of the same keywords.

Man this gets confusing.. In one thread I'll read something about a link on a relevant site will be better than a link on a non relevant site, and then I get PM's and replys saying that relevancy isnt important at all.

Again, relevance that human readers can see and understand will lead more of them to click the link. And it probably does help the search engines to understand what your site is about, by putting it into context. But there's nothing bad that will happen to you for getting an unrelated link, and some good will follow.

In my opinion, it should be related to your site (unless with it is just an excuse to lin to your affiliate products)

If you are not working with affiliates, link only pages related to yours. If you are working with affiliates, link to those you want to earn big bucks.

    Just My 2cents...
