'Naruto Wallpaper' has 50,000 searches per month with 4k intitle competitors. It took me 3 months to reach rank 2 for that keyword.

The 1000 search keywords are good for sub-pages, I sometimes even create sub-pages for keywords with 100 searches. :p If the term only has 100 searches it usually takes absolutely no SEO to rank for it, just a decent title. The 100 search keywords convert very well though since they are so targeted.

Just to confirm...on the keyword discovery tool, the Total searches is monthly or yearly...because if you click on the question mark it says "how many times the keywords have been searched over the past 12 months". I just want to make sure.

That's weird that they would say yearly. 'Naruto Wallpaper' sends me 600 uniques per day at rank 2, if it was yearly it would get 200,000+ searches per year, not 50,000. I think it is monthly, even if they say yearly.

Overture gives 14491/month. So that would be 173,892 per year. Although, that was also before Naruto was running on cartoon network I believe (overture hasn't been updated since January 2007). Also, overture only has yahoo searches? This is a peculiar keyword.
Oh well, I guess that kind of illustrates the title of this topic.

The best way to determine what sites are competing is to go to the results on the first page and look at each page. Searching phrases with quotes can be an indicator on how targeted sites are on returned results but can be deceiving as they may not even be getting any traffic worth going for. Sometimes its the secondary phrases that are more fruitful and the marketers that cleanup in this area on natural search are the ones that really know how to research not just the niche but all the other related keywords or variations that many fail to target and most keyword tools can't ferret out.

Keyword tools are just tools and the best tool overall is right between your ears.

I'm aware of the concept, but once again. I like to know how many pages will be competing with me as the users search. Without quotes. It doesn't matter how targeted/untargetted a site is if it still outranks you.

But if you have the keywords in your title and they don't you should easily outrank them. So I like to do intitle:"keyword keyword".

Depends how established the site is.
Although they are easy to outrank.
Call me old fashioned I guess. It's worked swimmingly so far, so why change it I guess.
