Marketing One's Directory the Site Sift Way?

    Hi All,

I am still in the process of setting up my glorious directory. It is taking much longer than expected, but I am not cutting any corners.

Recently I came across Shoemoney's recent contest. Exciting as it is, what really caught my attention was the fact that the Site Sift Directory had sponsored a prize worth $500. I think this is a great way of promoting one's directory.

Basically you have to subscribe to the RSS feed of Shoemoney's blog. And your name goes into a hat. Winners get lots of goodies. Site Sift is giving away Sponsored Listings.

But I am new here. So I wanted to get your ideas on innovative methods of promoting directories.

    Thanks
    Ajeet

We sponsored a contest last year for a large amount of money and it was a great success

Its the way to go, if it fits into your affordable marketing budget :)

I haven't done any sponsoring on any contests, so I couldn't give u any yesses or no's.

But it does seem like a good way to get the word out.

However another aspect is to get the word out to the right audience.

I mean what do u want to do with your word out? Do u want people to come looking in your directory for information, reach a goal, sign up for a newsletter, etc, etc.

I will sponsor contests but no before I am ready to deliver a quality service/product. Not my first priority for now. I rather put my money to improve my product now.

Valid point here. Do not jump to big time promotion before you are ready to convert traffic to sales in significant %.

Still, that might be good way to get your directory known out there even before you make it ready for maximum conversions like part of brand building for long term benefits.

Sometimes you kill your brand when you promote it everywhere before it is ready and worth it for your visitors.

Yes, too early is not a good option too. I think he must decide this himself based on his business plan and his budget.

We haven't done too much promotion in the 3+ years our directory has been around... so this is different for us. Today 'Terry Smoley' won our first prize in the ShoeMoney RSS contest.

The prizes Jeremy (ShoeMoney) has for the contest are unreal... I cannot believe he got so many good prizes together. Some are CASH prizes as well. *crazy*

Thanks! Jeremy (shoemoney) is a buddy who I met a couple of years ago and when I heard he was doing a contest I thought this was a great way to help him out and get some exposure for us as well.
