With a defense budget of $21 billion USD, more than 1400 Thousand active troops (3rd largest in the world) and both fission and fusion weapons along with conventional long range missiles. it's powerful. Additionally, India along with Russia is developing a 5th Generation stealth combat fighter. which will take about a decade. So IMO, in next 10-20 years India will be one of the Super Power. But the the top 2 will be, as always, US and Russia.
The USSR was bigger than us by a hundred million people. We still had more nukes at the ready than they did - half of theirs were balsa wood show models because they couldn't afford to keep up. Had there been a nuke war, sure, they had enough to wipe us out three times, but we had enough to wipe their vastly larger landmass six times over. It was more of a "Who's got the most bombs!" race.
