Similar thing happened to me the other day. My class teacher was scolding me about wasting time online (she knows all about what I do online) & telling me that my education is more important right now.

I just told her that I am earning about 3 times her current salary, which shut her up for good :)

I have no life outside the internet too....

I just happened to have dinner with my whole family.. my uncle, aunt and my two cousins... both married and relatively successful. The older one asked me so.... what are you doing now?

"Me and a friend of mine are doing business on the internet.. I do design"

    and he was like..

"Weren't you a technical person before?

    "Yes.. ", I said.

And I said that we're doing website, SEO, hosting and stuff.. and explained in great length what we're doing and what it we could do to help companies.

"Well.. ok.. I hope you do well... " While giving me that weird look..

I only smiled... I think he'd be more surprised if I said that I moderate an erotic comic forum... ^_______________^

Yeah.. especially if you forum is filled with smart witty people.. ^_______________^

Sorry.. This is completely off-topic but... I have to ask you one question..

I mean for me..for me the "ordinary" world is just plain cruel. In my country at every crossings you can find people begging because the government is too corrupt, education costing thousands of bucks and just a click away I can read in the RSS feeds that in the same time people in another country are killing each other in the name of "religion", women getting raped by the hours, children forced into prostitutions, monks getting shot at because they voiced their opinions and civilians and soldiers becoming "causalities of war" because some stupid government official decided that it's the best way to combat terror?

And meanwhile in my virtual word I can say whatever I want whenever I want to, earn money, have all the information I need whenever I want to, learn new things, read hentai, and combat Strogg invaders with my mouse.

So I'm just wondering how is your virtual world be worse then the ordinary world?

Well dealing with council and committee's generally means every meeting we go around the table in the beginning and introduce ourselves. In the beginning it was a little awkward for me as I'm a young person with nothing compared to "John Smith, head CEO of the Department of Community Services, specialising in mumbo jumbo" so I used to just say "I'm Courtenay, I'm 17 and I'm no one".

I'm 18 now though and I've been 'coached' at what to say for media purposes. This is what I say:

"My name is Courtenay, I'm an 18 year old student studying diploma of multimedia at GCIT. I do a lot of work in the non-profit sector, I do web design part time for Volunteering Gold Coast and I organise safe, all ages drug and alcohol free events. In my spare time I run my own website for young people coping with mental illness"

You have to come up with something good at something like a roundtable or else you just end up having no opinion.

I tell people I work as a clerk, it's easier for them to understand. If I told them I'm an Internet Marketer + freelance webmaster, it will take time to explain. Plus, it's annoying.

Just tell them how much you make and how long it takes you to make it... really that's what it all boils down to!

Can you imagine how hard it is to explain to grandparents (!!!) what I am doing :)

I failed trying to tell them what internet is, so I just say that I work with a computer :) My grandfather is sure that I need to find a job ;) Because young lady should better be a teacher than spend so much time doing unexplained things with a computer :)))

I know what you meant, I have the same issue. My family always nag me to choose teaching as my career. They don't see where will I be if I stick with Computer Science. They just can't face the fact that I can only work around computer and I can't teach!

i used to tell people that i work as a freelance networking engg, as i was doing that previously, along with doing online activities. but these days, am about 15+ hours a day on internet, and after that there is no time left for anything else!

so honestly i tell them that i do internet marketing, and then the questions just comes pouring in!

Yest thats the point. They think that anyone can do all this webmaster thing.
Why do everyone underestimate the skills required for earning online?
